I'm going to jump forward a bit to Challenge #8: – Talk about a current fannish project

I'm working on my small fandom big bang piece for [community profile] smallfandombang with a mininum 10k wordcount. Rough draft is due end of the month. I'm almost done with the first draft and it's going to be about 20k.
The fandom is Jungle Cruise (movie) which I'm surprised has so little fic on AO3 and aside from a couple of gifs and art on Tumblr has almost no fandom.
tumblr screencap from thehmn with chibi style artwork of jungle cruise and the mummy with caption reading A period piece about a rugged charming adventurer, his British love interest, and her posh brother, all going on an adventureto find a magical object. Am I talking about the Mummy or Jungle Cruise?
screencap of a tumblr post with art and caption comparing Jungle Cruise and The Mummy

I found it very similar in style to The Mummy movies which are still popular though I admit never so popular as to exclude them from Small Fandom fests and exchanges. I really fell in love with this and fell into a bit of Jack Whitehall fangirl spiral and I blame Clifford the Big Red Dog for priming me in advance of this movie
I should get matched with an artist for some art or other non-fic medium piece. I doubt I can find a beta but I'm pretty pleased with how well using Balabolka text-to-speech helps me find errors and check pacing. The first draft will require quite a lot of editing.

I mean, I had to rein in the outline to tighten things up when I realised how far I was behind on writing but that's not a bad thing. I did have to rejig a couple things because despite having the rough outline and initial scenes broken down in Scrivener (and I highly recommend the "paste your notes into each scene to avoid blank page terror" advice) things needed some work as I actually started to write, beginning at the prologue and start, but then jumping around to write particular scenes I had planned more thoroughly than others which then led to necessary changes to the overall structure.
Then I did some research and dithered and did some more research and then made stuff up but also did more research because of a need to touch on or specify some 1918 geography/travel and mythical creatures/spirits plus etymology online got used a lot to see which phrases were in use or not.
(I can't share any quotes/bits I'm proud of while it is a WiP as that's against the rules of the community)

I'm pretty pleased overall I think though I've gone back and forth with "what was I thinking" a couple of times! It's strong on friendship and family dynamics, but has some dark themes; angst, depression, spiritual possession, period typical homophobia, and some suicidal ideation. It does of course have a happy ending because hurt/comfort/angst with happy ending is a large part of what I write!

Challenge #1 Update your fandom information. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space.

I actually updated some of my profile info in 2023. I'd been away for a while and then came back gradually and suddenly my pinned posts were in my feed not future-dated and somewhat out of date in general. So DW and LJ and more recently FF.net (I'm rarely posting there but do sometimes post for older fandoms).
I updated some of my interests but they probably need more work. My tags, recent posts, and what I post to AO3 are probably more indicative of current trends.

I have just updated my AO3 profile to tidy it up a little.

My profiles at LJ, DW, AO3, all include a statement on transformative work.

Challenge #2 In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

IDEK where the year went.
However Christmas is nearly here and then the lull before New Year and [community profile] snowflake_challenge will be back! I hope to actually participate this time.

If you've never seen the challenge it is
An annual event to highlight the best parts of Fandom and the people who make it that way. It's a celebration about all of us and all the creative things we do, all the ways we touch each other and make a difference.
Everyone is welcome, creator or consumer or someone in-between, inhabitants of Tumblr, LiveJournal, AO3, Dreamwidth, dA, FanFiction.net, Mibba, Bluesky, Mastodon, mailing lists, or whatever platform or media you use.

The challenge runs officially from January 1 to January 31. There are challenges being posted every other day during this time but there is no deadline to complete any challenge.

You can see the previous masterpost from 2023 for an idea of the kind of things to expect, though every year the mods try to feature new challenges as well as revisiting old faves.

There's a fun pre-2024 poll you can fill in with loads of ticky boxes here.

Challenge #3

Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Is it cheating to say I did this last year for snowflake and these are still some of my faves?

With the addition of DW landcomm [community profile] lands_of_magic, writing comm. [community profile] ushobwri (must be a member to see posts), and from last year [community profile] sunshine_challenge a mid-year sister comm to snowflake challenge. eta: tellshannon's entry reminded me of [community profile] 100fandoms; I've only done about ten so far but it's a fun challenge. I've still got a handful of LJ's 100tales to do and so, one year later, I still haven't begun the DW [community profile] 100prompts!

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think I touched on this a bit during the sunshine challenge fannish identity post. I've been involved in fandom for a long time. I wrote fanfic longhand before I knew it was a Thing. I had paper zines (Quantum Leap, Babylon 5 my main ones) and then mailing lists/Yahoo Groups (Brimstone, maybe Buffy, I had non-fannish groups too), and then FF.net came along, and LJ, to be joined by AO3 and DW.

My first fic posted to AO3 is Much Saves the Day, Robin Hood BBC, 21 December 2006, (back dated work that's also my first LJ fic entry).

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hi all! I updated my sticky post post a bit late last year to reflect some of my newer fandoms and because someone pointed out to me that the date on it was early 2020, which had seemed a long way off when I first wrote it! I may edit it a bit more now I've been writing this post and thinking further about introductions.

I've got a long list of fandoms.
I also made a list of movies I watched in 2019
And a TV and book list

I post original work to my writer blogs on Wednesdays and those posts get copied here, sometimes as a round-up later in the week or as a monthly post/links to the original social media posts. My writer website with WiP outlines and links is here.

I'm doing Get Your Words Out again this year, 150k is once again my goal. I was behind a bit last year but not by as much as the previous year.

I learnt and developed how I write a bit more during 2019 but maybe that's something for a later challenge or a longer post :)

On my blog you'll find mostly fanfic, original fic and poetry, ramblings about media and fandom, and occasional meta, and some real life posts including my monthly BAG post (where I've Been, at At, am Going) with some occasional photos, plus posts for the Wheel of the Year. Sometimes I'll write about myself and social issues often through a fandom lens; asexuality, being childfree, etc.
I do a round-up post at the end of the month with links to all my posts for the month here and at the writer blogs, and an update on my GYWO total.

Day 15 - Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it.

This is a lovely one, especially this year. I wasn't sure how much time I'd have to participate but after the first few days I managed to hit my stride and enjoy not just writing entries but reading other entries and getting to know people.

There's been such participation that this year it has made me feel positive about fandom and re-energised. All the love for journaling and the connections has been beautiful to see. I've found some new followers - *waves* so now I've got more activity on my reading page which is so much fun with a lot of new interests. Without the challenge I might never have crossed paths with some of these people, so I'm grateful!

[community profile] fandomsecrets has a post here with 2 secrets that sum up some of the best things about fandom. Secret 02 talks about imagining getting support from a fictional character to get through some terrible times in their personal life and how they find that character inspiring even when all else seemed lost. Secret 03 talks about how listening to a podcast has got someone through a difficult time in their life.

I think we underestimate how much fiction and media can positively impact us. And part of fandom more generally is how it can help us connect with other people, and encourage us to create, and to build community. That's what fandom is or can/should be. And I think that's what Snowflake Challenge aims for, to remind us of the good in fandom, of what we do and why, to introduce us to new things and new people, and to give us a chance to express all of those things. Thank you all at [community profile] snowflake_challenge!
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
Day 14 - In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. What are your hopes and dreams for fandom?

You could probably have a made that said something like "After the increasing toxicity and low interaction values of Tumblr, a return to more thoughtful and positive interaction at DW" and most of those doing today's challenge would co-sign as a hope for the future, and point to the recent uptick in activity as a hopeful sign.
So that's me, and most of the other posts I've read so far. Love your DW. Love interacting with people. Love the privacy settings. Love that everything doesn't have to be "Safe for Work" and/or "unproblematic". Love that people aren't reblogging your fic posts with hateful rhetoric about how This Ship Is Bad and adding threats/harassment to it. Love seeing content people share. Love meeting new friends and finding out about their lives and their pets and their crafts and hobbies. Love coming away feeling connected rather than more distant.

I've done a lot of posting and linking to my previous 'dreamwidth' tagged posts here (I'll tag this post with it to make it easier to find) and at Tumblr to try and encourage people here/back here. I know I let things slide because lack of audience got disheartening and last year was hard, but I've always been here even if not posting so much, and I'm going to do better this year. Post more. Comment more. Signal boost more.

I never posted much to Tumblr alone aside from a few quiz/meme things, fic etc being posted/promoted here. There are a few things however and I'll try to decided which I want to bring here. Sometimes it's more reblogs with my thoughts/comments, sometimes a graphic. Even my meridianrosewrites side tumblr, solely for promoting work I've posted to AO3 along with any art for it, has its index pages for tags and links here at [community profile] meridianrosewrites because DW is 100% easier to edit regularly with new links than Tumblr's interface.

So for me, I want DW to be my major hub again, and I'd love that to be true for more people!
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
Day 13

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

This is a good one to talk about. A couple of years ago it was comment on every fic that I finished reading at AO3 that was over 100 words. And I've done that, probably 98-99% success rate. Last year it was "write more ideas down so I don't forget them" and that's only been about 60% successful but that's still better than before. I did the [community profile] writethisfanfic thing to get started and was OMG I can't write down all the things, but I got down a lot of them in a spreadsheet and I try to add to that. As I mentioned in another entry, I still don't always write it down, or I make a note somewhere other than the spreadsheet and have to do catch-up later but I'm getting better at it!

This year I've vowed to be nicer to myself. There's some personal rambling here so feel free to jump down to the bottom below the cut/stop reading!
So this year instead of letting myself feel beaten down, I'm focussing on how to be kinder. To find things that make me happy and do them. To spend more time at DW and less on Tumblr. My mantra is "you don't have to do it all at once." Just keep going and maybe 250k is possible, or maybe not but 100k is.
Related: "It doesn't matter"; maybe you don't need to do the things at all or maybe not now or maybe not perfectly.
It's okay to say "I can't do this right now" and step back and reassess instead of beating myself up about it. I don't have to do it all at once or maybe at all.

This weekend I'm having to consider if I need to drop out of small fandon big bang. I had a few ideas for the fandom I'd chosen but I signed up when things were not great and I've only written a bit for any of the ideas. And I'm telling myself it's okay, there'll be another round of SFBB. I can write any of the ideas outside of SFBB (and that allows a lower wordcount). It's okay to not be able to do it this time. It's okay if I do suddenly have a burst of energy this week and get down enough words that I think I can finish by the deadline.
That's one example of how I'm trying to be kinder instead of telling myself I'm a failure!

Day 12 - In your own space, create your own challenge.

Echoing what some others have said, and what day 7 was about: try something new!
If you've never participated in a bingo or icon challenge or exchange then give it a go! If you've never listened to a podcast or watched a fanvid then why not try at least one or two?
If you want to try a new fandom or pairing, go for it! If you never write gen, challenge yourself! If you don't usually leave comments then try doing so for the next five (or ten) fanworks you enjoy and start building the habit. Comment to someone you haven't interacted with before :)
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
Day 11 - In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

Day 9 – Commit an act of kindness

I'm not sure it's nice so much as part of being polite and part of fandom and meets my goal of commenting on fics I finish, but I've left a lot of comments this week on fic and icons, including an icon I found on another site and sent PM to let user know I loved their work. I wrote semi-crack fic for [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's prompt and posted it here. I read, commented, and voted on original fic at [community profile] therealljidol. I linked someone to a piece of media they'd expressed interest in. And I've tried to leave comments on posts in my circle and to reach to a few new people via snowflake and have made new friends!

And if anyone needs an invitation for AO3 I have a couple, just comment and let me know and I'll send you a code :)

edit: [profile] tjs_whatno wanted for their 6 for people to check out other people who are completing day 6 (fannish wishlist) later, so I've tried my best to give some recs and comments :)
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (borgias a)
In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I did a few for this question last year of some of my favourites. This time I'll pick things I completed last year. 2018 was a rough year and I didn't write much, though I did finally achieve 100k for Get Your Words Out. So there aren't as many fanworks to pick from!

Four fics + bonus 2017 rec below the cut!

Day 7
Try something new: I read fic in a new fandom, The Great Showman. This is the first fic I was most drawn to and finished reading (and left a comment for!):

Series: Part 3 of You Run With Me
Summary:

Phillip has a secret. P.T. has an accident. Things could get interesting.

Part 3 of the "You Run With Me" series, a Barnum/Carlyle friendship arc.

I've read a few more fics in the fandom too! I only watched the movie for the first time in December last year so I hadn't yet thought about fandom beyond listening to some of the tracks on Spotify. There's a lot more fic than I expected :)
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

What I wrote that last year: Can we please do as most people asked on their fannish wishlist for day 4 and leave more comments? Can we journal more and create more? Can we rediscover the joy of fandom and stop with the "anti" behaviour? Please.

This year I have to say I've loved seeing more people come to/return to DW in light of the Tumblr purge. I did also find some communities actively standing up against anti behaviour and writing thoughtful meta about fiction, including at least one that's now at DW [personal profile] fiction_is_not_reality which helped me feel less alone. I've been spending less and less time at Tumblr and now more time here and I can honestly say I come away from DW far happier than I do from reading Tumblr. More community, more nuance, more focus on creating and supporting than "liking" and harassment. So yes, more of that!

Fanart is always welcome too of course!

Cheating because this isn't strictly fannish, but I always welcome more followers for my professional writing blogs, and I wouldn't have got this far writing original work and posting it without have the fanfic, LJ, and DW communities to encourage and support me. At the blogs I post fic snippets, flash fiction, poetry, writing prompts and more; I do write twists and modern takes on fairy tales and mythology, which straddles the border between original work and fanfiction!

My website has a WiP page for current novels in progress.

Day 5 - Promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

I'll rec
1) some resources great for making the most of Dreamwidth
Community Promo (for finding new comms or promoting your comms)
[site community profile] dw_community_promo http://dw-community-promo.dreamwidth.org/

Fandom Calendar (for finding fannish events, comms, bingo/fests/exchanges)
[community profile] fandomcalendar https://fandomcalendar.dreamwidth.org

Fandom on DW (as above)
[community profile] fandom_on_dw https://fandom-on-dw.dreamwidth.org/

These can help you find communities and events including writing opportunities like [community profile] yuletide, [community profile] therealljidol, 3 sentence ficathon and of course [community profile] snowflake_challenge.

2) some of my favourite writing communities
Hurt/Comfort bingo – my first and favourite bingo comm, now on DW. Get a card, make fills, claim bingo.
[community profile] hc_bingo https://trope-bingo.dreamwidth.org

Trope bingo – currently signing up for amnesty round, round 12 under new mod.
[community profile] trope_bingo https://trope-bingo.dreamwidth.org

Allbingo – not only does allbingo have themed months but you can always post your own bingos here. Finished hc-bingo? Missed deadline on trope bingo but have now completed a line? Want to make a card from a site you miss, like kink bingo? Well go ahead and post here!
[community profile] allbingo https://allbingo.dreamwidth.org/

3) I love landcomms. I still miss [livejournal.com profile] whedonland and [livejournal.com profile] legendland.
I don't know if [livejournal.com profile] gameofcards will be back soon, but I'm currently involved with [livejournal.com profile] superhero_land and enjoying it (check it out, and if you decide to join, tell them I sent you :) )

eta: this amazing round up of links to get your started at DW and find content thanks to [personal profile] saxonvoter :)
and I forgot [community profile] smallfandombang though maybe that's because I'm so behind on my current entry ;)
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
Thanks so much for running this again mods! I'm sorry I couldn't help out this year but you've got a crack team up and running things smoothly :D

Fandom Snowflake Challenge will be happening again in January :)
Click the banner to visit the community and find out more! This annual no pressure event is a nice way to meet new people, find and rec great fanworks, make things, and generally begin the year excited about fandom and the people within it. There's no need to sign up and participation is totally up to you if you do one day or all the days, or don't complete them yourself but enjoy reading other people's entries for the daily prompt/tasks.
The mods are currently looking for more volunteers to help out with posting and commenting and possibly some promotion on other platforms. If you're interested in volunteering or want more details on what that entails, contact spikedluv @ dreamwidth.org.
