"It's terrible," Silver said mournfully, poking at the spaghetti with a fork.

Flint was chewing manfully but his expression spoke volumes. He picked up a napkin and discreetly spat out the mouthful.

"I wouldn't say it's a failure," Flint said carefully. "But even a stray cat would think twice."

Silver laughed and the tension was broken. "I'm still not much of a cook."

"Conveniently for you it means I have to take you out to dinner, or at least order in," Flint said, pulling out his phone. "What do you fancy?"

"Still Italian," Silver said. He smiled. "And then you."

Drabble for the Silverflint DOW Week 11 November 18, 2019: talent, kettle, forest

After fighting off an attacker a cold and wet Silver and Flint take refuge at Miranda's cottage. Season 01, huddling for warmth.

They ran through the forest in the rain, finally reaching the cottage where Miranda gave them blankets, put on the kettle, and went back to bed.

Silver took off his wet garments and huddled by the fireside under a blanket. Flint followed suit.

"You're not hurt?"

"Just cold," Silver said, teeth chattering. He had a talent for lucky escapes and Flint had killed their attackers.

"Come here." Flint pulled him close to share body heat, skin to skin.

Silver stopped shivering. The kettle boiled; Flint offered to make tea.

"In a minute." He didn't want Flint to let go yet.

Silver returned home and Flint's face fell.

"Sit," Flint ordered. He fetched a bowl of water and a cloth, crouched down to dab at the bloodied lip and bruised cheekbone. Damaged knuckles had left a blood smear on Silver's trousers. Silver winced.

"What happened? Did you lose a bet?"

Silver shook his head.

"I'll ask Billy," Flint said, angry that Billy hadn't brought Silver back from the pub.

"I'm used to being insulted," Silver said softly. "But that man insulted you. Us."

"You're an idiot," Flint said but he was incredibly touched that Silver cared enough to fight for them.

Summary:

When a practice drill awakens real feelings Doctor John Silver finds himself drawn into a complicated if satisfying relationship with both trauma surgeon James Flint and socialite Miranda Barlow that requires him to reconsider his plans and ambitions as well as his sexuality and desires.
Just as things seem perfect however a secret from Flint's past threatens to destroy the fragile balance. Devastated, Silver considers walking away and only Max's common sense might avert further tragedy.
It will take a great deal of courage and honesty from all involved if they're to find a happy ever after. And then an incident at the hospital brings everything into perspective.
