I love this fest which is running again this year. I'm not decided on what exactly I to write yet though!

Visit [community profile] unconventionalcourtship or go directly to the sign-up post; read the rules, pick a day you'd like to post on and comment with your chosen date. 1k minimum fic, romance novel summary used for inspiration, any and all pairings (or moresomes if the prompt allows) are welcome. There's a link to a generator in that post which gives you plot summaries for inspiration, or you can find your own summary.

[community profile] intoabar is opening for sign-ups on Sunday 5 May.

The Ficathon Goes into a Bar involves a randomised crossover fic. You choose a favourite character from any fandom and then choose 4 other fandoms (not character) and the mod will give you a random character from one of those 4.

It's clearer from the 2023 sign-up example but you'll need to wait for the 2024 signup post to join the fun! You can write, make art, or create another kind of fanwork.

There are no penalties for not finishing anything, and no assigned posting dates, this is a low-pressure challenge.

I've completed fanworks for the community eight times :) You can see the 2023 masterpost of fanworks posted during the last event.

[community profile] smallfandomfest is opening again, now the Small Fandom Bang round is closed. This is a " a prompt-based bi-annual fic/art fest for small fandoms. The fest runs May-July and Nov-Jan."

You can prompt, and submit fills for prompts, in any small fandom. You may fill your own prompts. You can create fic or art. Small fandoms are those which have fewer than 2000 works posted to AO3.

The prompt submission post has details on the rules.

Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥

You can subscribe to the community, [profile] 3weeks4dreamdwidth and/or there is a feed you can subscribe to, just as you would a community. (This feed is a bit like the track tag at Tumblr, collating all the posts using the specified tag).

"Three Weeks for Dreamwidth runs April 25-May 15. During this time, people post content only visible on Dreamwidth (although it can be reposted elsewhere after the event ends)."

You can read more at this post and at [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's post which gives some ideas on ways to participate.
Basically, create, tag, read, enjoy!

The new community [community profile] lyricaltitles is having it's to the first challenge. It will run during the month of May (though entries will be accepted afterwards).

From the community:
"The challenge is to take an album of your choice and for each song, write a fic, using a lyric from the song as the title. This is a low-stakes, personal challenge, of course; there's no penalty for not finishing or running late."

There's an FAQ with more information.

[community profile] unconventionalcourtship will be running again in April, the 11th round - announcement post

kirk/spock willow/tara ron/hermione

What is it?
'Unconventional Courtship' is a panfandom challenge that aims to produce fics longer than 1,000 words based on a Mills & Boon/Harlequin novel summary. All fandoms and pairings are allowed.
There are links to generators that can help you brainstorm, but anything clearly a romance novel summary is allowed and you can change the gender and placenames to fit your fandom.

FAQ (2020) ; AO3 collection
EDIT: Sign-up post is open

I've written several fics for this challenge. I'm not sure I have a long fic in me right now - because these always end up being longer fics when I participate. The SFBB has taken all my writing energy over the last few months and while that is now finished and will be posted early April, I don't know if I can commit to another big project. That said, the fest is open for sign-ups until right before the closing date, so I have options.
edit: I have an idea...but need to outline it before I consider signing up

Nominations are over and sign-ups are now open at
[community profile] the_mane_event (a multifandom gift exchange for all things hair-related; tagset)
and
[community profile] hurtcomfortex (Hurt/Comfort Exchange, a pairing and freeform matching multifandom gift exchange; tagset)

Both of these are very much in my wheelhouse but I've not signed up for either. I didn't nominate and looking through the tagsets there's a handful of things I could maybe write. So I'll keep my eyes on these and see if a letter generates interest for a treat fic and when the events are done there'll be plenty of fun fic to read.

I have tags for h/c bingo but not a tag for theme: hurt/comfort?! Need to see if I can tag multiple entries at once
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
This month the theme for [community profile] allbingo is crafting!

As always there are public cards or you can make your own and the host explains
"You can mix or match any of the prompt lists below or make your own - I'd love for people to add more items to my initial lists for this fest! Feel free to use the prompts in any way you want to create fills made of ANYTHING; fic, poetry, vid, podfics, recs, or handcrafts. Art, icons, and wallpapers. Fiber crafts, music, or animatics. And all the other mediums not listed are cool too. The only limit is your imagination."

So if you're a crafter or like writing about crafts maybe visit the intro post and take a look! There's also a meet and greet post to share you crafting interests - my responses are there but I've added them under the cut

[community profile] bethefirst is starting round nine.

"This is a low-pressure challenge to write a fic, of any length, for a fandom that previously had none. That's it!"

Deadline: 23.59 GMT on the 20th of April
FAQ

I don't think I have any fandoms to participate with. The one time I was the first to write something at AO3 it was well between rounds of this challenge :P I still always subscribe to the comm as I think it is a great idea that gives people the encouragement to dare to post for a new fandom at AO3, and it's always fun to see what people come up with.
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
There are a lot of writers on Dreamwidth, whether it's fanfic, original work, biographical, poetry, meta, or something else. There's always space to discuss writing and all of the various aspects that involves from planning to publishing and everything in-between, and [personal profile] bleodswean is planning to set up a community on Dreamwidth where writers can talk shop.
If this interests you, please join in the discussion. We're also looking for volunteers to handle individual parts, so if there are things you enjoy doing, then suggest them. Posts include:

Round 14 Sign-Ups Open Now

[community profile] lands_of_magic is an interactive challenge community, sometimes called a landcomm.

There are all sorts of challenges and while some ask for a specific medium (fiction or graphics) the majority are open to all sorts of creative works.

There are also some games (play a level of a particular online game, jigsaws, sudoku, colouring in and more) and party events with many smaller challenges to be completed during the event.

The Creative Court is where you can post almost anything for extra points with bonus points if your piece meets the theme of the month.

I've made both fic and icons for a particular challenge, posted pictures of crafts I made to the creative court, and while I haven't often posted things like sigtags or games results if you check out my landsofmagic tag you can see that the challenge is open to all fandoms and none. I've enjoyed making sigtags (small graphics with your username and team name on to post with your challenge entries) and icons made from my own photographs.

It's the tenth birthday of the community and while there are some pre-round challenges like making this promo post, the round itself doesn't start until 15 March so if you're in the middle of other projects there's breathing room.

You can join the community at any time, and while participation is encouraged, completing at least one challenge will be enough to avoid getting cut at the end of the round. So why not give it a go?

This round of [community profile] trope_bingo is another amnesty round meaning you can make your own cards from the provided prompts, or reuse any of your old cards. The round also runs until June to include the usual amnesty period. As well as the usual bingo patterns you can submit "loose fills" i.e. fills that don't make a bingo.
The lower fills requirement is also still in effect, so 100 rather than 500 word minimum for fanfic with similar lower minimums for other types of fill.

For the [livejournal.com profile] a_war_of_roses "Fandom History 101" challenge; 5/5 The Knick

Title: The Knick
Format: TV Show
Era/Location: 1900, New York
Brief Summary: The Knickerbocker Hospital deals with poor patients others won't touch and pushes the boundaries with regards to surgery and new techniques; opium addict Thackery is brilliant but needs to learn restraint. He is less than impressed when told to work with a black surgeon, Edwards, but finds that Edwards is exceptional and that together they can reach new heights.
Why you like it/would recommend it: Excellent cinematography and effects and Clive Owen is wonderful as troubled if brilliant surgeon, Thackery. The show doesn't shy away from themes including racism, poverty, corruption, and reproductive rights, and there are many great characters and storylines. The more modern musical score provides an interesting contrast and it's amazing to see how far medicine had – and had not – yet developed by this time period.

[livejournal.com profile] gameofcards is currently in phase nine and recruiting new players!

Game of Cards is a landcomm where you play for team points by completing activities such as games, graphic making, and fic writing. Hopefully you'll learn new things and meet new people and, mostly, have fun!

Game of Cards is a multi-fandom comm so you can use any fandom (or none; stock images to make icons for example are welcome) to complete a creative challenge.

For the [livejournal.com profile] a_war_of_roses "Fandom History 101" challenge; 4/5 Versailles

Title: Versailles
Format: TV Show
Era/Location: 17th Century France
Brief Summary: King Louis XIV, determined to oppose the nobles working against him in Paris, begins an ambitious building project at his father's hunting lodge, Versailles. His personal life is complicated by his relationship with his bisexual brother, Philippe, his affair with Philippe's wife, Henriette, plots against his life, and war with Spain.
Why you like it/would recommend it: The hair! The costumes! The scenery! Phillipe – Alexander Vlahos is amazing as the second son who has never been allowed to overshadow the Sun King and resents his brother's vanity. There are a lot of complicated relationships to explore, a conspiracy to uncover, and some great side characters like Fabien Marchal, the king's head of security, and Claudine, who becomes the king's chief physician despite her gender. There are certainly flaws, historical and otherwise, but there is enough splendour and interesting characters and their relationship dynamics to overlook them.

For the [livejournal.com profile] a_war_of_roses "Fandom History 101" challenge; 3/5 Black Sails

Title: Black Sails
Format: TV Show
Era/Location: 1700's
Brief Summary: 2 decades before Treasure Island, Nassau is a haven for pirates and as the series begins two crews compete for treasure, the location to which a young John Silver holds the key.
Why you like it/would recommend it: I'll be honest, I was sceptical at first about the inclusion of fictional John Silver with real-life pirates like Charles Vane and Anne Bonney. The first season however gave us not only plenty of sea-faring action – with drama, humour, romance and more - but other storylines such as Eleanor Guthrie trying to make her mark as "ruler" of Nassau, Jack Rackham and Anne Bonney ending up owning the brothel, and the introduction of Flint's mysterious friend Miranda. The second season however really pulled out the stops and made me love Silver and the Silver/Flint interaction, and the reveal of Miranda's backstory was beautifully done, as was Max's transformation from prostitute to savvy brothel madam with a stake in finding the treasure. There are plenty of male and female characters, bi/gay characters and relationships, and hints of polyamory. There's some great sets and costumes and some lovely – real, not wigs! – hair :) The cast is good, largely Australian and British, and fans of "Merlin" will recognise Tom Hopper, here playing Billy Bones. This article 6 reasons you should be watching Black Sails echoes my sentiments about the depth of s2 and Silver's development and praises Luke Arnold for his performance as Silver.
