note: I wrote this, and thought I'd posted it, on 14 March; maybe Dreamwidth's outages ate it! Let's try again.

Meme snagged from [personal profile] corvidology; rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there’s a pattern!

I think it's mostly scene setting, focusing on a particular character. There are 4 dialogue openings, again mostly trying to set the scene in terms of place and/or tone.
Most of these are only the first of 2-4 lines of an opening paragraph.

I haven't posted anything since 22 December because the Small Fandom Big Bang has taken up all of my creativity. I'm still editing it. From earliest, 17 October, to the 22 December ficlets, my ten lines are

Every Day Should Be Hugging Day, Ghost Whisperer
Oh, those are lovely,” Delia said as Melinda held up the earrings, pearl studs with gold chains dangling from them.

As I mentioned before I "won" NaNoWriMo, but the novel is not finished. I promised I'd work on it this month, but for various reasons, that is not going well.
I wondered if I could recapture my enthusiasm the way I do for fanfic – I can't revisit canon (well I can read what I've written so far, but that's a dangerous thing when you're still working on something, you can become even more overwhelmed or start editing instead of writing new words) but I can play with the world. Make fanworks (pics, mixes, etc), write AUs, complete memes, etc.

Today I've gathered up some questions from various ship memes and answered them as best as I can for Bryony/Emeri.

30 Day Fanfic Writing Meme Index
Index  )
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (v:erica/hobbes discuss)
Memes are great for keeping you posting :D I was enjoying the fanfic meme, but that's finished now...and then I was going through my extensive 'read later' bookmarks and came across the May Writing Meme. A couple of the questions are too similar to the meme I just completed, so I thought I'd adopt it - with credit - change a few questions, and have at it. And if anyone else wants to complete it too that would be great.

So, are there any questions about writing, original fic or fanfic, or creativity in general, that you think should replace the duplicates? I'm planning on adding something that came up in a discussion over at the DW community Write This Fanfic regarding use of tenses, and by extension, POVs. But I'd love to hear other ideas.

I need a break from the meme, and to make the index post for the last one, so it'll be a few days before I organise this, so have a think :D

30 – Do you have a favourite fic you've written? What makes it your favourite? And don't forget to give us a link!

I have many favourites :D So many fics are special to me because they represent milestones; first time I wrote slash, first time I wrote a threesome, first time I wrote a big bang length fic, etc. Aside from the odd drabble I've done to meet a particular prompt requirement, there's something I like – even just a particular turn of phrase – in most of my fanfics.

I am pretty proud of Much Saves The Day, a BBC Robin Hood fanfic. I wrote it as a gift, it's one of the first fics I ever posted at LJ – if not the first, and I was really pleased with how the plot unfolded. I felt I got the balance between dialogue and description right, was pleased with some of the descriptions, and felt I managed to include both drama and humour, in line with the style of the show itself.

And that's all the questions D: Index post will be up soon. I had a lot of fun doing this meme. It'd be awesome if even more of you completed it, and if anyone knows of any similar memes, please send them my way.

29 – What is your current project or projects?

I don’t know. I have one co-authoring fic on the go with [livejournal.com profile] hrhrionastar. I'm supposed to be writing/making things for the [livejournal.com profile] legendland hiatus but nothing is jumping out at me. I'm writing original fic for the 30 days of fiction meme on an irregular basis. I'm feeling in a bit of a rut at the moment to be honest.

28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

I usually work alone. I've occasionally teamed up with someone for a landcomm challenge, and I did have someone make me some lovely, atmospheric artwork for my Dollhouse bigbang fic.

However, [personal profile] hrhrionastar and I have been writing together recently, and have a comm for our joint fics, Palace of the Prophets. Collaborative writing is a particular source of joys and challenges; you have to find a balance when you're used to working alone and having full creative control. That you're not doing it alone is also one of the best things about writing with a partner; if you're stuck on a plot point, or you've written a sentence that contains the essence what you want to say but isn't somehow the best way it could be said, you can pass it to your co-writer for advice. You get to act as both co-writer and beta reader for your co-author, and vice versa :D It's a very different experience, but one I'd recommend if you can find someone you're compatible with :D

27 – Where is your favourite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

I write almost exclusively on the computer. Last year I wrote a large amount of text by hand, and haven’t been able to type it up yet. I need a laptop, netbook, iPad or something like crazy. My desk setup just isn't conducive to copy typing.

I've thought about voice recognition but the software bundled with Vista is, putting it mildly, crap, and I haven't got the cash to buy anything better. Besides, I'd be too embarrassed, I think, to read my work aloud, even to the computer. I can write things I'd be horrified to contemplate speaking about.

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

Oddest or funniest? I don't know. I'm always having to look up random things and have a folder full of info and urls. When was this particular thing invented? How long does a flight from LA to London take? How much blood is the human body and how much can be lost before shock sets in?

I think I'd be hard pressed to find an area of research I haven't touched on at some point. Geography, history, law, politics, languages, technology…there's a fanficflamingo though that's appropriate here, because sometimes I get caught up doing research unnecessarily:

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

Sometimes. Noise distracts me – car horns especially. Sometimes I can only listen to instrumental pieces, other times hard rock will keep my energy level up. Some days I'll listen to a song on repeat while I work on a scene or edit a fic, only to find I can't stand to listen to it at all the next day.

I do have some playlists – angry rock is one I play that can drown out background, though it's a bit distracting to type to; it's good for getting my energy levels up. I have one with instrumental music. I have some that I use for inspiration for certain fics or genres.

I actually use music as a jumping off point quite often; I often get ideas while listening to music, like I'm watching a music video for my fic – fannish or otherwise. Unlike a vidder, though, I don't have to rely on existing source material to work from – though I admire vidders so much for how skilfully they can draw out alternative narratives just from canon sources. Ever after, when I listen to that song, it reminds me of the fic I've probably never actually written [probably at least partly because it's more fun just to listen to the song:P] – until I maybe reuse it as inspiration for a new fic :D

I don't usually use a beta. For things like Yuletide where the story is a gift, I try to, because a giftee deserves the very best I can give. If I'm very uncertain about a fic, I'll try to get someone to proof it. Whenever I do use a beta they've always been wonderful, giving me concrit and pointing out my silly errors as well as telling me what works.

However I did write a rant about sites that insist on a beta reader. When you're dealing with original fic or a small fandom or a rare pairing, it can be difficult to find a beta. And, as I write in the rant, some of the badfic on ff.net has allegedly had multiple betas. While I find a beta always makes my work better, that's because my betas are competent when it comes to spelling and grammar and, I'd hope, honest with their opinions.

I don't have any horror stories, just love for every beta reader who has taken the time to make my fic better :D

23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

My LJ, DW, FF.net if age-appropriate, AO3. With all these links in hand I then crosspost, to try to, to relevant comms; for the particular fandom and or character or pairing, for the place I got the prompt from, for comms for small fandoms, and so on.

I wasn't always this organised, and still have a backlog of fic to upload to other sites. I realise now that doing all the posting in one go is far more efficient, plus, when I do post to communites with all the possible links, it gives people choices about where to read the fic; different sites have their own pros and cons.

I do sometimes get anxious about posting; it feels like self-promotion, something I don't like doing. And in a small fandom there's a risk of being labelled 'that author' – the one who apparently posts too much, and/or isn't very good. Again, doing the all cross-posting at once can help. I don't get time to worry about how I'm being perceived if I'm just doing what has to be done in one fell swoop :D

22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favourite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

Yes. I've written two big bangs, some fics for the smallfandomfest and sweetdrabbleathon, and I've done Yuletide twice. I appreciate the structure and deadlines that make me finish fic – as you know by know, I'm a terrible procrastinator and don't work as hard as I should to write down my ideas or finish fic. There's an expectation that there will be an audience for fic, too; however, this doesn't always follow in my experience. None of the original prompters for the smallfandomfest prompts and the sweetdrabbleathon fest have ever reviewed the resulting fic. Which sucks. On the other hand, my Yuletide recipients have always commented.

Big bangs are something I really struggle with. It's such a big piece of work – fifteen k upwards in my experience. I used to write more, even when I had less time. I blame the Internet Now I struggle to complete anything beyond around five k.

There is a certain satisfaction to completing a big bang though. And when someone – giftee/prompter or not – gives you a lovely review, it's worth the effort of participating in a fest :D

21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

I've written in the same 'series', I think. 'Master and Slave' and 'Mistress and Servant' I feel are connected and I'd like to write a third to tie it all together before cross posting further – one of the pile of 'fics I might like to write one day' – Denna/Rahl where she believes him to be Walter, as was suggested by readers :D

I have got notes and a couple of scenes for a sequel to 'Suit of Swords' but that big bang did give me some grief and I haven't a full outline for it anyway…maybe one day :D

Of course I don't think there's anything wrong with sequels – if I'd loved an author's fic, I'll want to read more. What I do find frustrating is an author who posts lots of one-shots on ff.net where each one says 'need to have read x' and 'won't make sense if you haven't read x, y, and z'. I've nothing against people creating a particular sub-verse or AU to play in, but it can make it difficult to get into their work if no individual piece can be read on its own merits. If they're so related, make them chapters of the same fic. If they're not, then give me some context in the author notes.
In my notes for the 'Suit of Swords' sequel, the first few paragraphs do mention significant events from the previous fic – not just for new readers, but for readers who've forgotten some of the details since it's been so long since the first one. Tie-in novels do this all the time, helping to pin down the book's timeline within the canon, and bringing relevant details to the fore for readers who might not have seen all the episodes. And it pisses me off when readers criticize fanfic for this; 'we know she's the Slayer/he has blue eyes/what kind of car they drive'. The longer the fic, the more detail you can put in – no point wasting words on trivialities in a drabble. But for a novella, I think it helps keep the story in-world.

20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

To a point, yes. But it's often from discussions arising from a work that give me plot bunnies to work with; I'll pick up on something that's maybe not the focus of the fic, but which the story has brought to mind, and perhaps mention it in the review – then the author might reply with further insight. Mostly this occurs in the LotS fandom, because there seems to be more interaction, certainly amongst the Darklings, than is usual. And sometimes something in a review to one of my fics will spark my imagination for a different take on the subject/pairing.

19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

I file it away in my head. Or I plan out the entire fic in my head. Then I never write it. This is true for probably ninety to ninety nine per cent of the ideas I've ever had. Every article on writing says 'keep a notebook'. Sometimes I make a note in a notebook or in a Word document or even a locked blog post, but I often don't go back to them. Sometimes I really regret not making notes, when I know I had a perfect description or line of dialogue worked out, or a way to resolve a plot hole, and later cannot recall it at all. Unfortunately I never regret it enough to change this bad habit.

18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

EVERYWHERE. Books , tv shows, movies, fics, news articles, adverts, song lyrics, music videos, conversations with people, prompts, random thing I see/hear when outside, misreading something, reading nutritional information on a chocolate bar. You can get ideas from absolutely anything, a moment of inspiration that gives you a line of dialogue to start from or a comedic plot point to work around.
Sometimes ideas don't even need a spark, they just seem to show up randomly in my head. Yes, this sounds odd to non-writers, but I'm sure most other writers understand.
rest of the days )
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (legend of the seeker: rahl angst)
I'm doing these two together because they are both things give me grief when I come to fill out the header for a finally finished fic.

16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

Summaries are important. If your summary is 'Joe/Jane make out' I don't know if it's worth my while. If your summary is 'Joe dresses up in uniform and makes out with Jane' you're hitting a kink and I'll give it a look. If it's 'post episode four, Joe and Jane seek out comfort in each other's arms' you've given me context.

That said, I hate writing the things. I'm probably better at summarising other's works – part of my degree training involved writing abstracts – where I'm not emotionally connected to the work. I sometimes find it hard to outline the major themes or plot points without giving too much away or skipping over what I think is a small but important theme. And drabble summaries are especially difficult, summing up in one sentence a fic that's already just one hundred words :P

17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

Bane. I favour one word titles and days/weeks later when I get a 'favorite' or 'kudos' for a fic and as such there's no other identifying information like 'x/y is my favourite pairing', I find myself wondering what the hell fandom that fic was in, let alone which fic in particular.

Not usually. Quotations and chapter specific summaries sometimes. But I've had enough problems titling the damn thing, without coming up with another six or more titles. They'd probably be things like 'In Which X Happens, To Everyone's Dismay' – which is just another version of a chapter tagline :D
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (v: ot3)
15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

I warn for character death – which is an odd one in many fandoms, where death is often a temporary inconvenience – and for non-con/dub-con, although I write those only rarely. I sometimes put a disclaimer about the violence involved being on par with the relevant show, because I tend to write in-line with that. I will warn for torture.

I sometimes think about replacing 'warnings' with 'content' because some things aren't necessarily warnings but people might like to know if they're featured in a fic. For instance I mention if there's vomiting mentioned because I know that's a squick for some people. Prevailing wisdom inists that Warnings as a category is important for the big three [death, non-con, graphic violence] and that other potentially troublesome content should be mentioned separately.

I also mention if I'm tackling themes like depression or suicide, and I specifically warned when I wrote a piece that it contained ' unsympathetic response to the depression by a major character, including scenes of verbal domestic abuse'. This might seem a bit over the top, but I don't know who might come across the fic, and what their triggers are. Furthermore, forewarned is forearmed. One day you might not be up to reading about a character with depression or a fic containing animal abuse or unwanted pregnancy; another day you might find the subjects bearable or even cathartic. So it's about building trust with your potential readers.

I also sometimes include spoilers with the warnings, saying 'spoilers for episode three' or 'first season setting' as a heads up.

Oddest thing? Probably for Sounds of the Sixties, which featured the following advisory:
Content and Warnings: Sex [f/m, m/m, threesome, masturbation], Drugs [marijuana] and rock'n'roll [OK, this one's not a warning unless you really hate Sixties music!]
The music was an important part of the fic, but I was really just joking when I 'warned' for it, riffing off the aphorism :D - and hence the 'content' part.
