Challenge #15 - Fandom Snowflake Challenge's 2023 Fandom Wrapped!

I really wanted to use the AO3 Wrapped but I can't get it to work for me. So I'll take a more random approach

Challenge #14 - Try something new.

I've written in other posts about new crafts I've tried out, and I've dabbled in all sorts of fanfic, poetry, fanmixes, graphics and art.

So I thought I'd read in a fandom I've never read before in a fandom type I'd not specifically sought out before, namely music videos.

Challenge #13 Make a rec list of fanworks!

I have over 900 bookmarks so let's go with eight of the most recent I've marked as 'rec' with the notes I added to my bookmarks and/or comments I left at the fics.
There's a fair bit of fix-it/character resurrection and some humour, and less of my usual h/c and angst here!

Fandoms: Ready or Not (2019), Jack Ryan (TV), From (TV 2022), Star Trek: Picard, The Haunting (1999), The Rookie (TV) 2018), The Witcher (TV)

Challenge #11 In your own space, create a fanwork.
I made 5 Icons for [community profile] lands_of_magic challenge "Villaintines Day" for villains and antiheroes.
I choose Eliot Spencer from "Leverage". An antihero who joined the team whose premise is "sometimes bad guys make the best good guys" but even in the current "Leverage: Redemption" feels he can never be redeemed.

I have so many other icons from this round at that comm!

Challenge #12 - Tell Us about a Personal Win.

I'm almost done with my first draft of Small Fandom Big Bang (Jungle Cruise movie). After a good start and lots of work done during November in no small part thanks to the [community profile] ushobwri month long social event, I got stalled a bit. It now has a beginning, middle, end, and while there's a couple of small scenes/extensions to scenes I want to make, and there'll be a ton of editing no doubt, I can meet the first draft submission date.

I think I mentioned previously that I met my GYWO goal again last year and signed up for same 180 day habit pledge this year.

Joining my local church gave me what I was missing, a real life sense of community. I was welcomed warmly and made to feel part of the church family. I've helped out at summer fair and Christmas fair, attended karaoke, read at the carol service, and attended the Christmas eve Crib service. I don't think I've ever been hugged by so many people, and made to feel so immediately part of of something. It's pushed my boundaries and while there are great places online to meet people, and I've loved getting back into using Dreamwidth, I was missing the IRL aspect of community and connection.

Challenge #6 - share a favourite piece of original canon (a show, a specific TV episode, a storyline, a book or series, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much

This is a difficult one because how do I narrow it down to one scene, one episode, of one thing?!

So I'm going with the ending of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" (the show which spawned the spin off Xena: Warrior Princess and introduced me to Bruce Campbell as Autolycus and I've loved so much of his work since) because it's one of those rare endings I don't hate. Read more... )

Challenge #9 Rec Us Your Newest Thing

Hmm. A lot of my current stuff is recurring, new seasons of shows I'd already been watching, movies I've seen before/next in franchise, or older shows which are new to me but old hat to others.

I fell in love with the character of Domingo Chavez in the final season of Jack Ryan last year and requested the character for Yuletide and did get matched on it so that was fun :) I couldn't find a gif so instead here's an image; I made this "name" poster for part of a [profile] lands_of_magc challenge:

I watched and enjoyed "Fast X" at the weekend, Jason Momoa was a fun villain camping it up in a movie that embraces it's silliness and over-the-top action scenes while retaining the key theme of Family in all the ways the characters understand that.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the rebooted "Gladiators" which has moved to BBC. Bradley Walsh and his son host and the whole thing is very much leaning into the over to top cheesiness against the adrenaline fuelled backdrop and it's capturing a lot of the nostalgia crowd and younger fans. Might even encourage children to take up more exercise!

I have a list of my credits/resources in the sidebar but it needs some updating as some sites have closed. Still plenty of graphic communities and resources however.
I'll choose some communities and sites to talk about here, mostly focused on writing.

writing communities: [community profile] getyourwordsout ; [community profile] ushobwri ; [community profile] smallfandomfest
bingo communities: where you write or make any kind of fanwork/original work for prompts [community profile] genprompt_bingo ; [community profile] allbingo As well as monthly themed bingo fests Allbingo also allows you to post completed bingos for other communities, so if you're using a list from a comm no longer running you have somewhere to post links to the fills.

etymology online for finding when words and phrases came into use and/or with their current connotation, very useful for any period piece

Behind the Name for looking up names by language or finding random names ; Nameberry has a number of list and generators and a search where you can specify letter, syllables, and origins ; Magic Baby Names s great where you choose names you like and it gives you ideas of others you might also find interesting. When you're naming a character this can be invaluable.
Fantasy Name Generators which has so many generators to give you random lists for anything from naming a b magical book to a Grishaverse character, to a modern Danish character to a restaurant name - or a river, or a mountain. Also with descriptions for everything from characters to plants to planents and flags e.g. The flag is made up of three horizontal stripes and a circle in light grey and brown. Their emblem consists of a twelve point star under tree, but the emblem is only shown on very special occasions. The emblem stands for their country's nature, their suffering and their bravery. Designed with role players in mind this is a great site for all writers needing a bit of inspiration.

Internet Typewriter is a free, no distractions, customisable text editor. You can sign up and access it on any device. You can turn on electronic or manual typewriter sounds! You can adjust the colours. You can print to pdf. There are paid features but I find this works well without - a free trial of the paid features is given to everyone automatically in November to support NaNoWriMo.

I will add a graphic resource, making icon tables for dreamdwidth and mention cool math games as a SFW site with a lot of fun games that aren't just for kids with physics, strategy, puzzles, platformers, and more.

I'm going to jump forward a bit to Challenge #8: – Talk about a current fannish project

I'm working on my small fandom big bang piece for [community profile] smallfandombang with a mininum 10k wordcount. Rough draft is due end of the month. I'm almost done with the first draft and it's going to be about 20k.
The fandom is Jungle Cruise (movie) which I'm surprised has so little fic on AO3 and aside from a couple of gifs and art on Tumblr has almost no fandom.
tumblr screencap from thehmn with chibi style artwork of jungle cruise and the mummy with caption reading A period piece about a rugged charming adventurer, his British love interest, and her posh brother, all going on an adventureto find a magical object. Am I talking about the Mummy or Jungle Cruise?
screencap of a tumblr post with art and caption comparing Jungle Cruise and The Mummy

I found it very similar in style to The Mummy movies which are still popular though I admit never so popular as to exclude them from Small Fandom fests and exchanges. I really fell in love with this and fell into a bit of Jack Whitehall fangirl spiral and I blame Clifford the Big Red Dog for priming me in advance of this movie
I should get matched with an artist for some art or other non-fic medium piece. I doubt I can find a beta but I'm pretty pleased with how well using Balabolka text-to-speech helps me find errors and check pacing. The first draft will require quite a lot of editing.

I mean, I had to rein in the outline to tighten things up when I realised how far I was behind on writing but that's not a bad thing. I did have to rejig a couple things because despite having the rough outline and initial scenes broken down in Scrivener (and I highly recommend the "paste your notes into each scene to avoid blank page terror" advice) things needed some work as I actually started to write, beginning at the prologue and start, but then jumping around to write particular scenes I had planned more thoroughly than others which then led to necessary changes to the overall structure.
Then I did some research and dithered and did some more research and then made stuff up but also did more research because of a need to touch on or specify some 1918 geography/travel and mythical creatures/spirits plus etymology online got used a lot to see which phrases were in use or not.
(I can't share any quotes/bits I'm proud of while it is a WiP as that's against the rules of the community)

I'm pretty pleased overall I think though I've gone back and forth with "what was I thinking" a couple of times! It's strong on friendship and family dynamics, but has some dark themes; angst, depression, spiritual possession, period typical homophobia, and some suicidal ideation. It does of course have a happy ending because hurt/comfort/angst with happy ending is a large part of what I write!

Challenge #4 IceBreaker Challenge! Tell us about yourself.
To begin, I'm going to borrow [personal profile] tellshannon815's idea of posting the image made for a [community profile] lands_of_magic challenge on the same theme:

Me with my nephews, pub lunch (that particular one is fish with red wine :D), and lots of photos of animals some past and current pets and animals I like. A pile of books because I used to read a lot and still dabble in books, ebooks, and read fanfic, and a sunflower because it is one of my fave flowers.
That challenge was to describe yourself in on-fannish terms but I'll add to that here. I'm multifannish and mostly involved in TV fandoms but sometimes I surprise myself by getting into a movie fandom and when that happens it hits pretty hard. I read, write, make icons and sometimes famixes and less often currently fanvids. Writer is a key part of who I feel I am.

Challenge #1 Update your fandom information. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space.

I actually updated some of my profile info in 2023. I'd been away for a while and then came back gradually and suddenly my pinned posts were in my feed not future-dated and somewhat out of date in general. So DW and LJ and more recently FF.net (I'm rarely posting there but do sometimes post for older fandoms).
I updated some of my interests but they probably need more work. My tags, recent posts, and what I post to AO3 are probably more indicative of current trends.

I have just updated my AO3 profile to tidy it up a little.

My profiles at LJ, DW, AO3, all include a statement on transformative work.

Challenge #2 In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.
