I've let myself get behind, and there's over two months worth of links here, so it's longer than usual. But given how some of my Tumblr posts have zero notes (remind me how tagging your posts is guaranteed to get a Tumblr audience unlike the "dead" LJ?) I'm keen to showcase them here too, and I always like to share links to articles I've read that have stood out for me.

This Show Reblogged gifs from "The Flash", featuring the father-son type relationship between Barry Allen and Joe West to which I added some commentary about how I love all the characters and this relationship.

Lewis: The Moonbeams Brief review/commentary added to a reblog about an episode of "Lewis" featuring Tom Riley as an artist who appears to be on the autistic spectrum.

Overnight Everything I Loved Was Gone I posted a link to a longer excerpt which was originally posted here and added some commentary of my own about the Internet and public shaming.

Why Historical Inaccuracies in Wolf Hall Don't Matter I posted an excerpt from a longer newspaper article. Wolf Hall is a drama, not a documentary, so artistic licence is allowed. And how accurate can we be about the Tudors anyway…in matters of characterisation, what can accuracy mean? We will never know the exact balance of sexual desire, dynastic ambition and theological disputation that led Henry VIII to marry and divorce in the way that he did. Finally an article saying what I seem to say every damn month. I added brief commentary when I posted the link.

Artisitic License in Vikings, Black Sails, and Da Vinci's Demons A reblog of another article that gets it; Da Vinci’s maxim that “the best story wins” thus applies to historical fiction as a whole. The genre often comes under criticism for historical departures, but as we well know, “history” is a constructed narrative, and what we term “accurate” can often be subjective. Such artistic license not only makes historical fiction more narratively cohesive and dramatically entertaining, but is instructive in ways that history is not, as the artists behind these shows use the conscious inaccuracies to underscore the perspectives and motives of the people of that era, helping us deepen our understand of that era, something history alone cannot do."
I addded my own commentary and graphic.

I'm a 20's Something Erotic Writer Who's Never Had Sex I posted a link to the article with commentary because as an asexual I was hoping to find this inspiring instead of some condescending crap about how with the writer bragging about being "fully functional" despite being a virgin without a husband or kids while being hypocritically nasty about "sad old single romance writers with cats". Her youth will fade and maybe she'll lose her "real" job that she's proud of, and then she'll be the "stereotype" she's so horrified by. Though since this post went utterly unnoticed, maybe everyone agrees with the smug author that it's okay be a virgin but not be an older virgin and/or someone without "real" employment because writing doesn't count. One more author I'll make sure never to read.

Terry Pratchett: An Accidental Pagan Theologian A lovely article I posted a link to that points out "He was one of the very few writers to speculate on how deities come into being, first as particles of energy, then accumulating more energy from the minds of worshippers (in the book Small Gods)" and talks about how "Much of his work explores ideas of social justice."
I added my own commentary: "As a pagan, a lover of stories, and a writer, I agree wholeheartedly. The stories around the power of belief, the power of story, the power of people to affect change, are wonderful concepts. His work has impacted, and continues to impact, my thoughts and beliefs and creativity."

Things I Want in Da Vinci's Demons Season 3 And since I probably won't get the interaction between these two particular characters, despite their shared experiences, I'll just have to write it in fanfic.

Other articles

True Gender Equality Is Actually Perceived As Inequality Reblogged (with some minor commentary in tags) link from a longer article about Fandom and Male Priviledge which is worth a look, examining male privilege generally and the more female nature of fandom and how more recent male involvement risks damaging spaces largely developed by and for women.

In Celebration of Old School Live Journal Timely, given my post about how LJ is not dead is this article where the author waxes nostalgic about LJ and the connections she made through it. Not good enough to keep her invested in using it, and she inadvertently makes a case against Tumblr and it's inability to foster the same kind of personal connections, but it's still an interesting read – and some of the comments on the article are made by current LJ users.

Hapax and Heyer, Austen and Irony, or, What I should have said an interesting article in which the author talks about the difference between the works of Georgette Heyer and those of Jane Austen.

13 Things Fan Fiction Writers Are Very Tired Of Explaining. Yes, we can and usually do write non-fanfic, and actually, writing fic usually isn’t “just a phase” are two of the gems here.

In my mini-meta about sexuality in mainstream vs non-mainstream fiction, I mentioned two articles that I think warrant mention in and of themselves:
The Thing about Reading Fanfic and Original Slash you get used to that particular writing/reading culture after a while. You get used to the frank discussions of sexuality and kink, the close attention to diversity and social justice issues in the text, the unrestrained creativity when it comes to plot. The most amazing, creative, engaging stories I’ve ever read have almost all been fanfiction, and I think part of that is because there’s no limitations placed on the authors.
And
Halt & Catch Pointless Heterosexuality looking particularly at "Supernatural" but addressing issues of representation and queer baiting on the whole: "There are a lot of different rationales fans and viewers put forward in the argument that Dean should not be shown as canonically bisexual, one being that “the show is not about that” or that it would “distract from the story” or that it “serves no purpose.” Alright, well, for the moment let’s just skip over the fact that no one in the history of ever has argued that depictions of heterosexuality ought to be relegated only to shows that are “about” romance/sex. Or that canonical affirmation of a character’s heterosexuality “distracts” from the story. Or that a character’s heterosexuality “serves no purpose” so it should not be present in the narrative at all. Let’s just skip over the queer-phobic nature of demanding that same-sex eroticism constantly justify its own existence in media in a way heterosexuality NEVER EVER EVER is called upon to do. Let’s just by-pass that particular issue, for the moment." The author is rightfully angry about how queer identities are treated.

So today is return to Return To Livejournal day. Only I've never left. Here are some of my thoughts about that – and while it's LJ day, the following refers to both LJ and DW, as blogging platforms that are almost identical to each other while being very different from other social media sites – and thank the internet gods for it. While I regularly visit lots of types of sites, from news sites to metaphysical webpages, and maintain online presences at many social media sites, there is something special about LJ and DW.

So, I've been here since Nov 2007 (DW since April 2011). I've not left LJ and fandom in favour of solely skimming through Facebook or because I've "outgrown" fannishness. I've not dumped LJ in favour of doing nothing but reblogging at Tumblr or viewing pics on Instagram.
Yes, I maintain a tumblr and a couple of fandom specific sideblogs, and yes, it can be easier to post an image you've edited and get more hits. But it's not really for fic or discussion; it's better used for skimming images and promoting fic and articles to read on other sites, sites which are better suited for text-based communication and easy to follow (threaded) discussions.
Yes, I regularly use DW to post to, but I maintain a presence at both sites and follow people and communities at both. Leaving LJ for the downtime during the DDOS attacks instead of switching to parallel use via DW was, to me, like giving up coffee because your favourite shop was closed for refurbishment – and there was a similar coffee house *right next door*.

I've stayed here while people disappear, come back and make one post, and then disappear again without interacting directly with anyone else. I used to always comment on these posts to show someone was reading and that they ought to post more frequently. I've largely stopped doing it, because you can only cheer someone on for so long without reciprocation.

I've stayed here because the content here is created, or meant to inspire creation, or is properly curated: fic, graphics, or well-annotated rec lists, and meta round-ups.
I've stayed here, able to read 1-3 posts per week made to a journal, rather than the 50+ posts some Tumblrs generate daily. Here that one really interesting meta isn't lost in the crush.
Here posts don't get lost or deleted because someone's changed their name for the fourth time in six weeks, breaking all the links to the material. Here there is a sense of pride and longevity, that we are creating things worth reading, worth preserving, something beyond mere ephemera. If Tumblr is a throwaway glossy magazine, LJ is a journal.
(And the management would well to remember it, and not try to emulate Facebook and other sites, driving their core users away.)

I'm here, having fun with things like [livejournal.com profile] legendland and [livejournal.com profile] gameofcards which encourage creativity and connection and trying out new things.
I'm here for things like [livejournal.com profile] therealljidol, being encouraged by things like [community profile] getyourwordsout/[livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout, being inspired to create by things like [livejournal.com profile] 100_tales, [community profile] hc_bingo/[livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo, [community profile] allbingo, [community profile] intoabar, [livejournal.com profile] mmom.
I'm here for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide and [livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest and[community profile] fancake.
I'm here for [community profile] metanews and [livejournal.com profile] little_details and [livejournal.com profile] hdtv_caps and [livejournal.com profile] icon_textures. For the icon makers, and the journalers, and the fic writers and readers, the vidders and the reccers.

I'm here, where I can post more personal entries with varying levels of public or private visibility. I'm here, posting photos and icons. I'm here, posting fanfic, and original works.
I'm here, reading journals and comms that are still active and interesting. I'm here, and plenty of others are still here too.
I'm here, and I'm tired of hearing how LJ is dead.

Or, "Picky, Picky, Picky".

A quick tech support post, since I'm making the same comment on more than one person's LJ:

The icon picker has developed amnesia -- or, rather, has lost its short-term memory.

About three days ago, the icon picker started glitching when you comment -- no matter what icon you select, it reverts to the default when you post. You can edit the comment and reselect the icon, and sometimes it will not revert again.

The only way I've found not to have to re-re-edit is to hit the "More options" button before posting and run it through a check, at which point you can re-select the icon and it will stick.

Please feel free to signal boost this.

(Rumours that the icon picker has also forgotten its name and the way home have yet to be verified, but are probably true.)

(You can pick your friends, and you can pick your icon, but you can't pick your friends' icons.  Right?  You can't keep your friends from changing or reverting to old habits, and apparently, you can't keep your icon from doing the same.)  Need coffee.

My LJ has been suspended without any prior notification or reason. I've made a request to support to see why. I was able to read/respond to entries yesterday so this seems odd; it's not as if my journal is new or I've been posting "offensive content" so I don't know what's going on. Another one of those times I'm glad I have DW where I do most of my posting now. But there are some comms I still very much want to follow at LJ who haven't moved over/moved fully over here, and my main LJ friends who have DW journals still mostly only read and write at LJ. So. This sucks. Will update later.

ETA: A DW comm member mentioned this link: http://jjpor.livejournal.com/113011.html suggesting LJ has FUBAR with a new anti-spam measure. *fumes* I love how the LJ-er says "They didn't add "you scumbag", but they may as well have." because that "your journal has been suspended" page is pretty offensive when you've done nothing wrong. At LJ you're guilty until we decide you're innocent!
gtfo photo tumblr_ml855nq5HD1qlmhbeo6_250_zpsbe3bccf3.gif

ETA two: Resolved; Thank you for your inquiry. Your journal was suspended due to some anti-spam measures that were put into place. However, the suspension of your journal was incorrect and I have now unsuspended it. I apologize for any frustration this situation caused you.

Regards,
LiveJournal Abuse Prevention Team

Which is all well and good, but how come I had to find out about this via a third party? If it's such a prevalent issue, why isn't it on the Facebook page and the official announcement comm? I'm pleased the issue is resolved but pissed off at the fact it happened in the first place and how it is being handled. Crappy customer service, but nothing new there I suppose.

LJ Downtime

I'll (probably) make a proper Christmas round-up/New Year stuff post at some point. For now I'm frustrated with LJ being all but inaccessible for two days now. I managed to make my New Year post (and trying to crosspost this) but not to reply to all the comments yet – and there might be more comments if LJ was up, because I've got notifications for three new year posts that I haven't been able to visit and comment at yet. Plus there's a ton of Legendland bingo goodies that I haven't been able to look at and comment on yet as well as other posts and fic that I want to read. So, bear with! I'll get to reading/commenting/replying soon :)

With all the downtime/varnish errors and spambots that have been plaguing LJ this week, an easy resolution is to use Dreamwidth more. I'd encourage other people with both LJ and DW accounts to do the same. Here's a few simple ideas.
Crosspost more.
If a fest is being run at both comms (such as hurt/comfort bingo is), sign up at DW.
If a comm. is mirrored at DW, watch it – it will give you access when LJ is down, and if the comm moves to DW completely you'll already be subscribed.
Leave more comments directly at DW entries that are crossposted to LJ (yes, they're easily imported, but it moves traffic stats to DW as a show of good faith/bad faith in LJ, and gets you used to reading more at DW).

I'm already behind on the DW Snowflake Fandom challenge but there's no real deadlines and I can catch up. In between trying to access LJ I've done real life stuff, including going for a walk and having family lunch including the taking of a few family holiday photos. So I've been having some fun. Hope everyone's having a good start to the year.
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] mrs_jack_turner for the virtual gift of a pumpkin cookie :D

I've finally posted my original fic index posts. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dorothydeath for helping with the blurbs) Now I just have to keep them up to date!

I did have other things I wanted to do, but before LJ implements the new f-list as a mandatory thing, I'm starting to go through all seven pages of my subscriptions and unsubscribe from old journals/comms no longer updated, and then track via email/add rss feed to DW for all the ones I'm still active in. (I've managed one page so far!) Then I guess I'll back up all the pages I have in 'memories' before people start deleting their journals as many have threatened to.

Dreamwidth is aware of, and is working on a fix for, the importing comments issue.

I hope to post some more photos next week, from Halloween, and of the pets.

Goals for the month: post at least 8k of fic. Claim at least one bingo for cottoncandy-bingo. Start my Yuletide assignment.

Found on Tumblr: Craig Horner (Richard, Legend of the Seeker) kissing Claire Holt (Rebekah, The Vampire Diaries) in the Australian tv show H2O (circa 2007).

So, after nearly a decade at this site, LJ finally does something that makes me actually rage. No popcorn and laughing as the masses storm to news posts complaining, this time I'm actually worried.

A while back I was invited to help out with BETA testing new LJ services (I got this invite via [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases).

They have just announced BETA testing of a new friendslist.

LJ is planning on redoing everyone's friendslists in the style of the new comment page and update page. They want to copy tumblr and make your friendslist into a dashboard-like system page (infinite scrolling and all). It's also been renamed to "feed" (this I don't mind too much, though). In fact the whole dashboard idea with infinite scrolling wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that everyone will be locked to one specific layout. The system style comment pages are bad enough, but now I'll have to strain my eyes reading my flist? That defeats the purpose of this entire site. The font, use of whitespace, oversized boxes and UI elements ... all contribute to making the page difficult to read, on a site where all you do is read. Aaaah. Even just the possibility of adjusting the font (style and size) would make this suggestion easier to swallow, but it's still not something I'd want for my journal. It would not improve my LJ experience in any way (in fact it would most likely make my daily LJ activities more time consuming).

Now, I wasn't able to make the BETA page display my own friendslist, so I apologise to the random users who are featured in the screenshot, but to give everyone an idea, the below image shows you what your friendslist probably will look like in a couple of months.

(Click for big)

I never switched over from Dystopia, so that adds to the weirdness. You're going to have to picture this with the standard LiveJournal drop down navigation + no blue sidebar to the left. Click the screenshots for bigger versions.

Top of page with links to journal, archive, profile

Example of text heavy post as displayed on friendslist

New buttons to the right replace the navigation strip. One tab for filters

One tab for Archive/Calendar, you can filter your feed to display posts from one specific date. These buttons follow along as you scroll down the page (infinite scrolling).

All friendslists will look the same.

Snippet from the locked post at [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases:
The friends page has been redesigned as a system page for all users, and is now available for Beta testers. There is a link at the top of your friends page allowing you to switch between the new and old versions, and will later go into public beta testing. You can switch back and forth between both versions throughout beta testing.

PUBLIC POST AT [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases ABOUT THE NEW FRIENDSLIST: http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/79480.html.

You can also see the proposed changes for yourself by enabling the BETA on your own journal (instructions from [livejournal.com profile] ruljautonews):
It's trivially easy to test beta features.
1) Go to [livejournal.com profile] lj_ru_beta and request to join.
2) Wait to get confirmation that you've been accepted into the community (this could take a few hours.)
3) Go to this page and choose Go To under Beta.
4) That's it, you're now testing the beta release. All site-scheme pages should now display a big "BETA BETA BETA BETA BETA BETA" in yellow letters across the top.
5) You could make comments in the [livejournal.com profile] lj_ru_beta post, but if you do please keep this in mind: the majority of commenters there don't speak English and if they do it's not their primary language. Machine translation of Russian is lousy. "My hovercraft is full of eels" lousy. While you can engage in basic dialogue and get a feel for what the other person is saying, don't get too hung up on anyone's phrasing.

You can easily switch back to the old version.

Make sure you let LJ know what you think of these proposed changes, I can't be the only one who thinks this is a horrible idea.

ETA: It's nice to see that I'm not the only one worried about the proposed changes, but please direct your feedback through the proper channels. This is a private journal, I have no affiliation with LJ. Please also be respectful when addressing the LJ staff. They are just doing their jobs. Thanks!

via http://lj-refugees.dreamwidth.org/61638.html

I'm increasingly glad to have a DW account. If more comms would migrate over, I'd need LJ less. I've already moved my rss feeds over to DW and do most of my posting direct to DW and x-post here. DW actually notifies users in advance of making changes, make posts as soon as there is a problem, and generally try to engage with and support their users. Rather than the "LOL, we've updated the site again" LJ news posts that make my heart sink because there's bound to be something no longer working.
[Edit: and I've just reposted an entry about the new proposed crappy layout. I hate infinite scrolling, I turn it off on Tumblr. I'm using a layout I like. I am using a site skin added via greasemonkey so I don't get migraines from using LJ's default blinding white space comment pages. Do Not Want more shitty changes to have to work around]

And while I'm having a whine about online services, read about Amazon UK's poor customer service:
http://www.bekkelund.net/2012/10/22/outlawed-by-amazon-drm/
This is why if I'm ever in a position to afford an ereader it won't be a Kindle any more than I'd choose an iPlayer as an MP3 player. DRM is awful and "protects" business interests over the consumers who've paid for these electronic goods. You don't own these books, you only rent them, and companies can and have retroactively censored, deleted, or blocked access to paid for products. I love digital media but sometimes hard copies are better.

Has anyone had problems crossposting to LJ? I had serious issues with it yesterday, all security levels. I haven't changed any of the settings at either journal.

edit: thanks for [personal profile] buffarama for pointing me in the direction of [profile] dw_maintainence; this is a known intermittent problem, probably on LJ's end and so there is currently no workaround. You'll just to keep trying!

Livejournal Scrapbook is going away and will be replaced by the mysterious "Photo Album". Your 10GB of Paid Member space is now 2GB. If you care, there is an explanation in Russian on the Russian news page. There's also a user-submitted translation.

+ You will no longer have access to your Scrapbook once this goes live.
+ Your images will redirect, but the URL will be different.
+ Unable to tell what will happen to any photos you have that put you over the 2GB limit.
+ Back up your Scrapbook just in case.
+ If you want your photos transferred over now instead of waiting, let them know here.

LJ Fixes

meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
[personal profile] calliopes_pen provided a link to [livejournal.com profile] xylodemon's entry containing the code to remove that new annoying scissors icon on LJ; here

While I'm mentioning it, I'll remind everyone of the fix I use to view comment pages that aren't so hard on the eyes. Using the Stylish add-on for Firefox (there's one for Chrome too), I downloaded Stuntpilot's LJ's Easier Read theme in December and have been grateful for it ever since.
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
I've finally changed my profile information at both LJ and DW. I've also updated my sticky post.
I've updated my DW theme and customized it, and made cosmetic custom changes to my LJ theme.
I now have a rotating header. It only has six images currently but I'm hoping to add more. The best and most simple tutorial on how to get a rotating header I've seen is here
I've set up an original fic filter post. The link is in my profile and my sticky post.
I've added a Disclaimer and Transformative Works Statement LJ // DW and a Concrit Welcome Statement LJ // DW .
Now that's all done, I can concentrate on starting my masterlist :D

Heads up

Mar. 7th, 2012 01:48 pm
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
Just a heads up that I'm planning to post some information posts and placeholder posts as part of my forthcoming overhaul of my profile page and drive to index my journal somewhat. I'll be putting them 'date out of order', but if you're using notifications you'll still see them so I apologise for what might be spam.

I also hope to be getting index posts up soon as part of building a masterlist of fic and, later, fanworks generally. These will hopefully showcase my previous works as I index them, and so will be posted as normal, but I don't expect to do more than one a day, and probably no more than four in a week. Almost certainly less because I excel at procrastination.
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (legend of the seeker: cara smile)
Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes yesterday :D I had emails, PMs, virtual gifts, birthday posts, fanfic and fanart in addition to my few real world cards and gifts from family and a close friend. You all made me feel special :D
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
So LJ is having problems again. That's why I signed up for a DW account, right? And I'm getting more comfortable here :D But DW still can't replace LJ entirely for me, because so many friends and nearly all of the comms I follow are not here. So I try to import often to here, and crosspost from here - I may have to do more crossposting from here, though; apparantly if you change something in the DW entry that you psoted to LJ, the LJ entry automatically updates itself...this is amazing and will cut down on editing if I have to change an embarassing spelling error or fix a url. I need to test this :D

I've been following the updates at the LJ Facebook page, and of course people are complaining about the downtime. And then there are people saying it's not big deal. And then there are the people who are saying downtime is no big deal and that people have no right to complain and should 'get a life'.

You know what? Beyond my immediate family, I have virtually no social contact most days in the week. Don't get me wrong, that's mostly okay with me. I'm introverted and pretty unsocial anyway. But my online activities let me deal with people in a way that allows me some control over the interaction; it's safe and can be done at my own speed, unlike real life. My online activities let me connect to people I have things in common with, who I give support to and receive support from. LJ has been a lifeline when things have been really bad in my life. Belonging to landcomms gives me a sense of community, deadlines to work to, reasons to type and research and improve my graphics skills. Blogging keeps me connected to people. Real people, just ones that are further away...

For anyone who thinks online friends aren't real friends, I recommend this link, which [personal profile] ivanolix posted about recently, saying that 'all of us in fandom by default have friends "in the box".'

I didn't think online friends were the same as real friends, and those five hundred Facebook friends some people have are the sort of casual accquaintances that don't 'count'. But the people you connect with, who share your highs and lows, they're friends, even if you've never met them in the real, physical, world. Hell, reality is overrated anyway. Online friends on the other hand are undervalued by most. Not me. Not any more.
