Day 15

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge, Day 14 In your own space, create a challenge:

Create something for a smaller fandom and/or a rare pair. Bonus points for a rare pair in a small/medium fandom (there are no actual points!)
and/or
Leave comments on fanworks in smaller fandoms and/or rare pairs to encourage more people to make the things.

Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

As I mentioned when talking about leaving feedback, my 2017 new year's resolution was to leave a comment on every fanfic, hosted on AO3, over 100 words, that I finished reading. (I needed some parameters; this doesn't mean I didn't leave comments at LJ/DW or on drabbles because I did, on occasion).
I'm going to try and keep doing that. I've already left comments on some fics this year.
My additional resolution for this year is to write down more of my ideas. Having plot ideas or dialogues while showering or in bed is one thing, but if I don't write/type at least the basics up, I forget them partially or entirely when I try to write the thing weeks or months later.
I'd also like to read some of the things on my very long to read list :P

Day 15
In your own space, talk about what you're taking away from this challenge. Did you learn something? Did you interact with new people? Or did you try out different fandoms or formats or relationships? What's changed between Day 1 and Day 15 of this challenge?

I remembered how much I love this challenge.

I discovered that people have a lot of Feelings about podfic :)
I got to squee about hurt/comfort fic and men with long hair.
I got to read a lot of entries and spread the love, and occasionally get a little love or a response to question in return.

It reminded of me of the better days at LJ/DW, when you could connect with people more easily and find friends and share both your fannishness and your personal life (no way I'm posting personal photos on Tumblr or talking as openly as I do under my f-list/access filter). These days it's hard to find anyone to squee with, it's a joy to get more than one comment on an entry, and it can be like pulling teeth to find a beta reader.

I almost wish we had something mid-year, a grain of sand challenge, to enjoy this outpouring all over. But I think it might be too much, like wishing for Christmas every day. It's all the more special for only being once a year.

It's been great and I want to thank the mods for running the challenge. I'm just sorry it's over for another year.

Day 11

In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself.

1. My creativity. I always say it the best part of me and I don't know how to exist without it.

2. I read, and I watch, and I analyse, and I have an eye for detail. There's no point creating something if there's never any audience for it. And the more impressed I am with you, the more I get to know you, the more detailed the comments I will give; and I will be honest. Possibly more detailed and honest than you'd like but that's another matter. If you want encouragement *and* concrit tell me and I won't hold back. If I beta read, I do it whole-heartedly.

3.I have eclectic tastes and know random facts about a variety of topics. I don't know everything about everything but I often know something about many things. And I will share my knowledge and link you to articles or recs. I will even do some research for you if the subject takes my fancy. It ties in with creating and reading, the last part of the triad is disseminating and repackaging information, bringing creators and consumers together.

Day 14
In your own space, share your love for something fannish: a trope, cliché, kink, motif, theme, format, or fandom.

Hurt/Comfort is my bread and butter. I could say more but I talk about it often enough that it seems redundant, though clearly I need better tags since I can't find specific posts to link to at this moment.
meridian_rose: pen on letter background with text saying 'writer' (Default)
Before I post the question and answer, I have a question for anyone reading. I'm posting it to Tumblr too in the hopes someone can tell me. You've all seen Texts From Last Night, Headlines from the Onion, Tumblr Text Posts, where you take an image from a fandom and add one of those text types onto it:

Is there a catch-all term for these images + text posts? Is it just a type of meme or, like LOLCATs is there a particular name?

ETA: thank you very much turlough who pointed out the term macro and linked me to the image macro wiki page. It rings a distant bell but I'd forgotten about it until now. Thank you for being awesome :D

Anyway, on to Day 12
What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?

Day 7

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.
I'm going to choose a couple of things from my Renaissance shows.

Skipping around the challenge days again to Day 10
In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces.

I'm currently attempting to write a Regency AU. There are reasons I prefer to write fantasy romance, where I can gloss over details and this AU is reminding me of them. Words like wanker, insults like snot-nosed and nouns like picnic are all too modern. The verb "to picnic" is recorded even later.

There are thankfully resources that can help.
One of my favourites for all sorts of "when did this word first become commonly used" is Online Etymology Dictionary
http://etymonline.com/index.php which gives the low down on the history of a ton of words and phrases. Highly recommended for all writers and lovers of language.

Specifically I've come across
Regency Glossary http://sharonlathanauthor.com/regency-glossary/ which is helpful for readers of Regency works as well as those wanting to write about the period
and
You Can't Say That https://www.prismnet.com/~dierdorf/nono.html which features an extensive list of anachronistic words and phrases the writer has encountered in historical books. Don't use these!

Day 9: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

I've been doing this since the start of the year :)
My entry Looking Back, Looking Forward mentions some of my goals. I also wrote for Snowflake Challenge Day 06 that I wanted to challenge my boundaries.
I made a f-locked list of fic I want to write, fandom specific, and I probably ought to make a more general list when I have ideas so I don't forget them!
I'm signed up Get Your Words Out again this year, and I usually like to complete one line minimum for any [community profile] trope_bingo and [community profile] hc_bingo rounds.
If [community profile] unconventionalcourtship runs again this year I have a summary in mind :D
Also talking about NaNoWriMo with my sister and how productive it was for me and how it made November exist for me, she pointed out how I hate February too and usually lose out on the month. Maybe I ought to set myself a writing challenge for February. So I may well do :)

Day 08
Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before
Within this year's challenge I've done that, commenting on other people's entries, as well as leaving comments on fanfic at AO3 for authors who are new to me.

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Day 6

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Skipping ahead for the moment to day five:
Creators create for a number of reasons. Often, we find ourselves inspired, and in the moment, we create. But creation doesn't occur in a vacuum, and it's too easy to walk away from a fanwork without saying anything.

Creators create for themselves, but they need to know that they have an audience and that their fanworks are being enjoyed by others. Feedback is a way to get some validation that what you've created is good.

Sometimes we go to comment on a fanwork and we find ourselves without the words to express how we feel about the fanwork. Or we become overwhelmed by all the amazing comments the fanwork has already gotten.

Don't let either of these things stop you from leaving a comment. There's no prize for the Best Comment Ever, and the creator just needs to know that you enjoyed the fruits of their labor.

Day 5

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

"Fandom Snowflake Challenge - to remind us why we love fandom and to recharge our fannish batteries."

"Every day for the first 15 days of January, we're going to post a fannish challenge. It could be something as simple as reccing fanworks to talking about what you love about fandom." There is zero pressure to complete any challenge: "The point is to stretch your boundaries, but not at the expense of stressing you out."

This challenge is for everyone, all fandoms, all media, all platforms. It doesn't matter if you're in a fandom of two or if it's a fandom of a lot or something in between. It doesn't matter if your fandom has quieted down over the years or if it's currently awash with fannish activity. Canon, not-canon, old, young, real people or totally fictional. Doesn't matter. Come play with us.

And even though the challenge is being hosted on DW, please feel free to comment anonymously and signing your name if you don't have a DW account, or signing in with OpenID, which let's you use your LJ (and other platform) credentials to comment. We'd love for everyone to participate regardless of what platform you use
