Summary: Sometimes, when she first wakes in the early morning light, Higgins doesn't get up and start stretching ready for a run or a yoga workout. Instead she lies on her side and gazes lovingly at Thomas, dozing next to her. These are moments she treasures.
Sometimes, when she first wakes in the early morning light, Higgins doesn't get up and start stretching ready for a run or a yoga workout. Instead she lies on her side and gazes lovingly at Thomas, dozing next to her.
She pushes aside her fears about their relationship and just enjoys this quiet moment of closeness. Him sleeping soundly, completely trusting and at peace.
On occasion she reaches out and lets her fingers trail the warm skin of his arm, or cups his face, her thumb grazing his lower lip until he stirs.
She likes it when he first wakes up and realises she's in bed with him, the glint in his eyes and the smile that tweaks his lips. She loves how he reaches for her, sliding his hand around her waist in an invitation she accepts, to snuggle closer to him.
Thomas strokes her hair, stills his busy tongue at times like this, and she wonders if he is soaking up this precious time, making a memory to hold onto lest their love affair doesn't last. That's why she's doing, but then she is both far more practical and undeniably more pessimistic than Thomas.
God knows he has every right to be colder and less sunny than he is after everything he's been through. Yet he presents a smile to the world, tries to see the best in everyone, generally lets things wash over him like a wave he's misjudged while kayaking, gone as soon as it arrived.
It's also true that she's seen his more serious side. She's seen his strength, his loyalty, his protectiveness. She knows he feels things deeply, but he doesn't wallow in grief or pain. Perhaps that's why he survived his imprisonment where others might have succumbed to injury and despair. Inside Thomas is a bright inner light that cannot be extinguished.
Juliet carries mental scars too and knows they've both been changed by their experiences. Yet she believes they are both quintessentially the same people they've always been, polar opposites in some things and almost identical in others.
She's shown him some of her scars, both physical and mental, from the events that have most deeply wounded her psyche to the mark on her back that wasn't from some important mission but a silly incident at a volleyball game she'd participated in with some fellow MI5 agents in a moment of downtime.
Thomas carries more physical scars than she does and sometimes she'll kiss at the mark near the top of his thigh, at the scar on the back his shoulder, and at the marred flesh near his hip. That latter the worst of all, both the injury that caused it and, due to the lack of proper medical treatment and brutal first aid administered by his friend that saved his life, in appearance.
The scars aren't something that repel her but rather help her connect to him. They're reminders of who Thomas is and the life he's led. That he's a survivor. That he doesn't give up.
Which means he won't give up on her, on them, not easily. It's touching, and somewhat frightening to be this wanted and loved again, to be vulnerable in order to accept and reciprocate his affection.
The best of times are when she's snug against his chest, his heart beating near her ear, his hand on her back, his warmth and scent enveloping her, and she feels nothing but contentment. Moments like these she wishes could last forever, or at least the feelings associated with them.
These are moments she treasures, ones that make memories stored for a future which she dares to hope they share, still together, still in love.
