For the
genprompt_bingo prompt "Care's an enemy to life"
The prompt refers to the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night "What a plague means my niece, to take the death of her brother thus? I am sure care’s an enemy to life."
For this rec list I've chosen stories focusing on Clay in 13 Reasons Why (TV) and his grief - and guilt - over the suicide of Hannah Baker which affects him so deeply.
Warnings: 13 Reasons Why and much of the fiction about it deals with many difficult themes including instances of and references to character death, suicide, suicidal thoughts/attempts, hallucinations, other mental health issues, and sexual assault. Mind the tags for each fic rec.
1. I Cannot Do This Anymore (429 words) by eternal_moonie
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: 13 Reasons Why (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Hannah Baker & Clay Jensen
Characters: Clay Jensen, Tony Padilla, Hannah Baker
Additional Tags: Deathfic, suicidefic
Summary: Clay Jensen found out why he is on the tapes. And decides he cannot do this anymore.
My notes: A sad, believable, what-if AU that takes place at the cliff scene, from Clay's POV.
2. Its You (1936 words) by bowiebaby
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: 13 Reasons Why (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Clay Jensen/Tony Padilla, Clay Jensen & Tony Padilla
Characters: Clay Jensen, Tony Padilla, Hannah Baker, mentioned - Character
Additional Tags: Mentions of Suicide, Mentions of Rape, the cliff scene, Angst, Suicidal Thoughts, First Kiss, Tony has a crush on Clay, Clay is oblivious, fluff at the end, might develop, Clay needs a hug, tony is happy to volunteer, but seriously Clay needs to be nicer to himself, hes a good egg
Summary:“Clay I think you got to get back from that edge”
He scoffed, turning to face him, his shoulders sagged in defeat, his voice full of a tone that chilled Tony’s blood. He was still gesturing about with his hands and Tony felt like he could throw up with how carelessly he dangled to the edge, ready to slip at any second.
“Why? Why shouldn’t I just jump? Just let go?”
My notes: Another AU of the cliff scene with Clay contemplating suicide but this time from Tony's POV, and with a happier ending and a Clay/Tony first kiss
3) The Ghost Track (1008 words) by csonepointsix
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: 13 Reasons Why (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Hannah Baker/Clay Jensen
Characters: Hannah Baker, Clay Jensen
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, One Shot, What-If, Light Angst
Series: Part 5 of Like 2017 Never Ended
Summary: Clay searches for, and finds, one last recording hidden on Tape 7 Side B
My notes: Only Clay would listen long enough to find the secret meant just for him. Well written, plausible, sad, but at the same time the message just for Clay urges him not to die too, to move on from Hannah's death.
4) A Clay Jensen destruction story (2181 words) by Minkey222
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: 13 Reasons Why (TV), Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: Clay Jensen, Tony Padilla, Hannah Baker
Additional Tags: not a happy fic, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Self-Harm, Suicidal Thoughts, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Implied/Referenced Character Death, Hallucinations, Paranoia, Clay needs help, honestly, my son - Freeform
Summary: He can pinpoint the moment when he realised he was in too deep. When he realised maybe he had gone too far into this hole and he’d never make it out again. It isn’t what you think. This moment isn’t monumental, it’s not sudden; the realisation didn’t slap him in the face. It was silent and slow and the build up went unnoticed like a gas leak. It was something so gradual that you didn’t even realise it was there until everything blew up. It didn’t seem that big to him.
Maybe he should have found it ironic that he was sitting next to her grave when Hannah Baker sat next to him on the bench.
My notes: In which Clay has terrible hallucinations and is taunted by suicidal thoughts and a hallucinated Hannah and mean!Tony until a hopeful ending with real!Tony. Some great writing with wonderful lines, in particular this paragraph " The tapes were an ordeal. They were left to destroy him and the others. To strip them all bare and pin them out on display like the frogs you dissect in Biology. To destroy their souls just like each of them did to Hannah. She reversed the game onto them to make them realise just how much their actions hurt her. Checkmate. She played the game and she won the lot."
5) For a moment (3691 words) by Minkey222
Chapters: 2/?
Fandom: 13 Reasons Why (TV), Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death
Characters: Clay Jensen, Tony Padilla, Hannah Baker
Additional Tags: Clay is not okay, Hallucinations, Suicide, Suicide Attempt, Implied/Referenced Character Death, Tony Is a Good Bro, Mental Health Issues, The tapes, AU, Au from after Clay listens to his own tape, Self-Harm, Each chapter is a separate side to the story
Summary: “Hey, you’re not going to do anything stupid tonight, are you?”
“No.”
“Promise me?”
“I can’t promise anything, Tony.”
My notes: This is marked incomplete with the author notes on the second chapter indicating they had a final chapter planned to look at the aftermath but this was last updated in 2014 so it seems unlikely there'll be a further update.
The two chapters however can standalone, the first by itself, or both as two halves, the first being from a grief stricken Clay's POV, the second from Tony's POV dealing with the same events and his own guilt and grief first for Hannah, then for Clay's actions in part one. Worth a read to see the negative impact of Hannah's decision on Clay and then Clay's choice on Tony…and of course both of those on everyone else who knew and loved them.

Summary: “Hey, you’re not going to do anything stupid tonight, are you?”
“No.”
“Promise me?”
“I can’t promise anything, Tony.”
For a moment Hannah Baker, the girl he killed, sits next to him at his kitchen table and smiles.
It’s a sad smile, her eyes don’t crinkle at the corners. Her eyes are dull- dead.
She just sits there. Her arms on the table, her hands connected loosely at the fingers.
He blinks and she’s gone. He thinks he is going insane.
No sane person sees a dead girl sitting at their kitchen table.
