This week I did as I intended and sorted out all my icons and made sure they matched at both LJ and DW so this is timely :)

#1 Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane), The Orville. I've had a Firefly icon for years and years. My most recent was a Stay Shiny Firefly icon combining the "keep calm" poster with a drawing of Serenity. But while I still have affection for the show and the characters, I'm not really active in the fandom.
I didn't watch The Orville on it's UK run, having a lot of other shows on, but the re-runs began and I gave it a go - and fell in love. This, as people keep saying, is the heart of Star Trek. There's a little more humour than classic or ST:TNG Trek but the hopefulness, the carefully handled social issues plotlines, the wonderful characters are all there. It doesn't hurt that not only is creator MacFarlane a lifelong sci-fi fan, but there are many people who were involved with ST:TNG (eg Brannon Braga) involved.
I've read a lot of the current fanfic for the show, now just starting airing S2. I really want to write fic. I've connected with the show and beyond and without going into major detail, I'm grateful for Macfarlane's work during some dark times last year. Choosing to reluctantly (15 icon spaces for someone so multifannish as I am is *hard*!) replace Firefly is my choosing to honour my new love, my enduring love of sci-fi, and my hopes for being more active in the fandom.

#2 Legend of the Seeker! One of my most active fandoms a few years ago. I loved, loved,

legendland the LotS landcomm and wrote tons of fanfic and made icons etc for it, along with using the show for other fanworks. On AO3 I have 114 fanfics uploaded for it and that includes a multichaptered collection of 56 (current) ficlets. There are probably a few more on my LJ somewhere…
This was one of those shows that was good but the fandom was better. The

peoplespalace was another favourite place to hang out. The characters were all great; in that icon are the main "good guys" team from season 2 which included one of my all time favourite characters, Cara Mason (the blonde).
I have such fond memories and I'd sign up for another reunion land of legendland in a heartbeat. This is a not forgotten show and the icon wasn't going anywhere!

#3 Another Legend of the Seeker one! This features Darken Rahl, primary antagonist and other another favourite character from the show. It was only uploaded to LJ until this week but I brought it over because I love it. It can be used for genuine angst, it can be used for hyperbolic effect, and damn I love the long haired ones :)

After the initial critics (or fans, or whoever) seemed dismissive of it, I've come to hear a lot of good things about Orville lately.

I had several DW/LJ friends who were fans of Legend of the Seeker and your icons made me nostalgic. :)

The critics hate it, the fans love it (the inverse of Star Trek: Discovery which I haven't seen any of) :)

I'm nostalgic now too! Might need to try and write another fic or something this year. I found myself reccing LotS works in other comments because it was a fandom I was so active in!

My friend and I just finished ST: Discovery and I can totally see where the fans are coming from, but I also really like it and am looking forward to season 2.

I love it when that happens and an old fandom gets sparked again. :)

I've seen a lot of ads for Orville and had been wondering if I should give it try! It's not directly related to Trek, is it?

No, not directly. It's sometimes billed as a parody but it's more strongly-inspired by than anything :) It's strongly reminiscent of the early Trek and STTNG - in fact I and others were convinced Isaac the AI lifeform was voiced by Brent Spiner as they sound so similar, though it's a different actor entirely :)
I read that MacFarlane pitched a Trek show, maybe Captain Chekov spinoff to CBS who weren't interested because they were planning ST:D. So he went and made his own show, with full creative control, which is the kind of Can Do attitude I can only aspire to!

I quite liked the pilot though my sister was lukewarm on it. It does get better throughout the season and the episode Firestorm, focussing on Alara, is excellent, looking at overcoming fears.
