Writing Meme Ahoy
Sep. 6th, 2016 08:54 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I saw this fanfic meme filled by Black Sails writer manjusaka here and I'm now a Black Sails writer who hasn't done the meme so as per that post I considered myself tagged!
Where do you publish your work?
AO3, LJ, DW, I used to but now only rarely post at FF.net.
What medium/application/etc. do you write in or with?
Word and Scrivener. Rarely I handwrite and type it up.
Do you collaborate with others?
I have done a little in the past (mostly Legend of the Seeker fic) but it's mostly just fests where I'm paired with an artist these days than collaborating on writing.
How much editing do you do before you publish?
Somewhere between too much (I worry about not having done enough which delays getting things posted) and not enough (gah, little errors still slip through). I've resisted for years due to the squick, but it turns out having the fic read to you is terribly helpful for finding things like "imagery" when I meant "imaginary" and sentences with missing words that the eye skips but the ear notices. This site is pretty good. Occasionally I've lucky enough to get a beta reader but I prefer small fandoms so it's not usually an option.
Do you listen to music when you write?
Sometimes. Sometimes I need quiet. Sometimes a particular song/style can get me in the right mood for the scene – though it's better for inspiring me than for using while I write. Focus At Will is actually great if you've never tried it, and I know others use things like video game soundtracks due to the lack of dialogue.
How do you decide what to write about?
Songs, conversations in person/online that spark "what if", just watching a show/movie, other shows that give me plot bunnies, news stories, bingo prompts and other fic comm/tumblr challenges and prompts, etc, are all things that inspire me. Having a challenge though, esp with a deadline, eg Yuletide, Hurt/Comfort Bingo, Small Fandom Bang, makes it more likely I'll prioritise and actually finish a fic.
When do you write?
It varies. Mid-morning and early evenings seem to work best.
How often do you write?
It varies.
Do you take requests? Why/why not?
I like discussing ideas but committing to something makes me anxious.
Is there any genre or type of story you want to write but are hesitant to?
I'm trying harder to overcome my reticence about writing things I like to read but for whatever reason don't usually write. I keep telling myself, "get the hell over yourself. If no-one wrote these tropes/kinks you'd have nothing to read, it's hypocritical and you hate hypocrisy so write it dammit." I've had limited success this year but it's still success. Generally, outside of hitting my own kinks, I will write whatever I want and I write a lot of hurt/comfort, AUs, and crack fics without shame.
Any inspirational quotes, videos, tricks, articles, etc. that help you stay motivated?
Fandom discussions are the best :)
Go to page 7 of your WIP, skip to the 7th line, and share 7 sentences.
It is ~forbidden by the rules of the fest to share anything of my current Black Sails WiP because I intend to attempt to write it for the Small Fandom Bang :)
In my WiP folder I do have a Da Vinci's Demons fic I've been working on that's longer than seven pages so here goes:
Leo shook his head. "I nearly killed myself and a couple of horses trying to get back here in time," he said. "I was so afraid of what I'd find."
"What were you expecting?"
"Nothing good." Leo pulled Riario closer, held him tight.
Riario didn't pull away.
Tagging: Consider yourself tagged if you want to complete the meme! Black Sails, Da Vinci's Demons, and The Borgias fans are particularly welcome though!

Date: 2016-10-18 12:52 pm (UTC)I think Scrivener looks daunting at first and is probably overkill for one-shots but it's so useful for long works, particularly if, like me, you hate writing in a linear fashion!
