Inspired by
tinny's posts about things learnt during each month, and because I love learning new words, I've got a few words/phrases I've come across recently.
Ayah – thanks to Indian Summers I discovered this word for a nursemaid or nanny employed by Europeans in India or another former British territory.
Burgage -
cmcmck introduced me to this word, tenure of land in a town held in return for service or annual rent; a medieval rental property where the house was owned by a king or lord
Cella – not to confused with cellar, I discovered this in a Hercules:TLJ fanfic, the inner area of an ancient temple
Claves – what did you play at Jo Jingles this week I asked my nephew; maccas, he told me. "Maracas," his mum corrected, "and claves." What are claves, I wondered; a pair of hardwood sticks used in music to make a hollow sound when struck together. I've seen them, I just never knew what they were called.
Tanistry – came up in a discussion on a newspaper article about hereditary vs other forms of monarchy. Wikipedia explains it is a Gaelic system for passing on titles and lands. In this system the Tanist was the office of heir-apparent, or second-in-command, among the (royal) Gaelic patrilineal dynasties to succeed to the chieftainship or to the kingship.
Phrases and etymology
Hamster –I was showing my newphew a library book on pet care which said the origin of "hamster" was German, meaning "hoarder". Online sources disagree not with the German origin but the meaning, which is unclear at best
The etymology online site dates the English word hamster to 1600, with the older name being "German rat" :)
bleodswean's compellingly bleak LJ Idol entry for the prompt "game night gone wrong" gave me an education in horse parts! Fetlock I had come across, notably in "Miller's Crossing" in which an unlucky gambler is told that "if I was a horse, I'd be down on my fetlocks praying you don't bet on me". A few other terms the pony loving girls knew I hadn't come across; Wikipedia provided a helpful diagram of equine anatomy

Another LJ Idol topic this week is immanentize the eschaton. I recommend you check out the link but to summarize as best as I can, the idea seems to be "attempting to bring about heaven on earth".

Date: 2016-05-03 08:14 am (UTC)I felt the diagram was much better than trying to describe the postern and cannon and other horse parts :D I hope it does come in useful.
