For the
writerverse "check in #1". A short snippet from my NaNoWriMo project, "Sorceress Apprentice". Please bear in mind that this is a very rough draft; the spirit of NaNo is to keep writing, not waste time editing until the first draft is complete. As such, I've only done basic spell checking and 'tidying up' for coherency.

In the morning Bryony slept in and only the sounds of voices in the hallway woke her. She jumped out of bed and grabbed for a loose-waisted dress. Slipping it on, she picked up a ribbon, fastening her hair as she headed out into the hallway.
“Oh, now I’ll have to get going,” Riley said as she approached. He and Emeri were standing near the doorway, Riley’s bag at his feet.
“He didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye to you,” Emeri told her.
“You’re going so soon?” Bryony padded over to them. She’d hoped Riley might stay a while, possibly a week or longer. It would be nice for Emeri to have a friend close during the days ahead.
“Alas, yes. There’s a ritual I want to observe over in Wyforde next week,” Riley told her. He took her hand and bowed low, kissing her knuckles. “My Lady. I hope to see you again soon though. I won’t leave it so long between visits this time.”
He placed his hands on Emeri’s shoulders, clutching him in an embrace, then before releasing him, Riley kissed Emeri once on the lips. “I promise.”
He scooped up his bag, adding, “I’ll be back by Winter Solstice.” He pushed open the door. “I’d like to overwinter in Threehills sometime.”
Emeri nodded. “We’d love to have you.”
Riley saluted Bryony and headed off the path. Bryony folded her arms. The Winter Solstice?
“You didn’t tell him,” she said.
Emeri shrugged, pushing the door closed. “We had other things to discuss.”
She scowled. “More important than the fact you’re dying? What happens when he comes back here in winter? When he finds out you lied to him?”
Emeri gestured. “You’ve heard what he’s like. He probably won’t make it back until early next spring. And it wasn’t a lie. It was more of an omission.”
She was in no mood for his obfuscation. “The point is he might have wanted to say goodbye. When he comes back he’ll be angry that you didn’t tell him. He’ll remember yesterday and wish he’d spent this time with you making the most of it.”
Emeri shook his head. “What he will remember,” he said sharply, “is that we spent a lovely evening together reminiscing. That is making the most of it. I had no desire to spend his last visit with him moping or pitying me!” He pushed past Bryony, and a moment later she heard his bedroom door slam.
