Writing Memes
Jun. 1st, 2013 03:27 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Without writerverse I'm worrying about not having the inspiration to produce fic, especially original fic, or poetry. On the other hand I have an unfinished meme or two lying around, the ongoing 100-tales table, and no doubt some bingo challenges will be starting up again shortly.
But, because I like to collect memes, even if I don't complete them, just as I like to collect bingo challenges, I've found three memes that I'm thinking of working on and that might help me get inspired.
Being me, however, I won't be working on them one at a time, one question per day, for thirty days. I'll probably work on them sporadically and possibly out of order. I'll tag them nicely, though, and make an index post if I manage to complete a meme :D
Meme One: OTP Challenge
What it is: It’s a challenge to draw or write a piece of fanfic about your One True Pairing every day for thirty days.
Source: http://dianeduane.com/outofambit/2012/12/19/young-wizards-30-day-otp-challenge/
Details: Now Diane Duane is writing 'fanfic' of her own published verse for this – and the ideas of fanfic/AUs/Possible futures for your own work is one that intrigues me. I'm almost certainly not going to choose an OTP for this – polyfanamorous multishipper and proud of it – so there might be fic, fanfic, various pairings and OT3's and gen (friendship pairings/moresomes) within my answers. I'll see once I get started. Will be tagged as writing: otp meme plus any appropriate fandom and/or character/verse tag.

Writing With Victor Hugo Meme"
What it is: From the entry: I greatly admire the Victorian writing style where nobody ever shoved "show don't tell" in authors' faces, and not everything was about focusing claustrophobically down on "the meat of the story"… here, for your delectation, are the first two weeks' worth of writing exercises in a program I've been working up for myself. …I should note for people coming in without context that these are just chapter-by-chapter summaries of the novel Les Miserables .
Source:Details: May attempt some of these, using various original fic/fandom verses. Will be tagged as writing: victor hugo meme plus any appropriate fandom and/or character/verse tag.
Questions:
1 Tell a character's entire life story (1500 words or less)
2 Show a character's personality by describing their household and household budgets (2000 words or less)
3 Describe a character doing their job well (800 words or less)
4 Demonstrate what a character does by telling us things they have said (2500 words or less)
5 Give a typical day in the life of a character, hour by hour (1000 words or less)

Date: 2013-06-05 04:38 am (UTC)Can't remember who it was now, but I came across someone who did a flash fiction piece per week for one year, all set within the world of her books. She released them leading up to the official release date as publicity, but she wrote them during the first draft to play with ideas, objects, side characters ets without worrying how they fit into the major storyline. Something like that would be a lot of fun, I think. I've been thinking about trying it as a warmup exercise at the beginning of sessions.

Date: 2013-06-05 03:18 pm (UTC)Wow, that's impressive! I'm not that disciplined, but I think when I write pieces I'm often doing this, playing with ideas and themes before I'm certain about some details. It means I will have to rework them later but I find that more freeing than having all the details plotted out :)

Date: 2013-06-05 02:41 pm (UTC)I should note for people coming in without context that these are just chapter-by-chapter summaries of the novel Les Miserables . This makes me wonder if one could actually write a novel using these exercises...fascinating idea.

Date: 2013-06-05 03:15 pm (UTC)Well, Victor Hugo did it :D But as the prompter points out, you'd be hard pushed to sell a novel with all these things in it today. It's all about rules like no adverbs and every single sentence being relevant to the plot :(
I'm hoping these will get me writing and/or making graphics, whether they're original, fanfic or indeed 'fanfic of original' :D
