"Nikolai," Aura whispered, tugging at his sleeve.
If she was using his name and not his alias there must be a good reason. He turned his attention to her, his body tensing in anticipation. She didn't seem afraid though. In fact she seemed amused. Nikolai glanced around and his eyes widened in surprise.
All around them, people were disrobing, velvet coats and fur stoles being flung carelessly to the ballroom floor. Some were removing their jewellery, others were not. Lady Mariana was already in the embrace of Sir Walter while many guests were still negotiating potential – sometimes multiple - partners.
Nikolai watched with interest as Frederica, in nothing but her riding boots and a heavy ruby pendant, rode Sir William as if he were a thoroughbred stallion.
"Well," Aura said. "You didn't say this was going to be an orgy."
"I had no idea." Nikolai scowled, scaring away a noble in a state of semi-undress who'd approached them with a hopeful look in his eyes. "What do you think?"
"I think we're not nearly naked enough." Aura hitched up her skirts. "We haven't had sex in public since Venice."
Nikolai smiled at the memory and stripped off his shirt. "So, as they say, when in Rome."
Rome; once upon a time this little spectacle wouldn't have been out of place there.
He nipped at Aura's neck, one hand caressing her thigh. In a low voice he purred, "I told you this would be an entertaining evening."

Date: 2013-02-07 02:00 pm (UTC)There was a tv show in the UK a while back called "What the Romans Did For Us" - quite a lot actually! I was reminded of it by your insightful "where everything comes from" remark :)
