Nikolai put his hands on Cecilia's shoulders. “Are you ready?" he asked fervently. "Do you think you’re strong enough?”

“For what?” she asked.

“To become like me. To become what I am. To leave your human life behind, forever."

She stared at him for a long moment and then shook her head, gazing down at the floor. "No. I – I don't think I'm strong enough."

He gripped her tighter until she winced. "You are. You can do this," he said.

"I can't. What you are…I cannot." She pulled away and Nikolai felt his heart break.

"I will not come back here. Never again." He hoped the threat would sway her, but she merely shrugged. It went against every instinct he possessed to leave her here, with the bastards who'd abused his beloved one, scarred her physically now as well as emotionally. Yet he'd also sworn never to turn anyone against their will.

Cecilia was crying, but her voice barely wavered as she said, "So be it."

"At least let me take you from here," he offered, one last gesture of love for her. "I can give you money. Somewhere to live."

She looked around the tiny, dirty, room. "This is my life. I should never have hoped for more. I do not deserve more. I cannot go with you. I cannot start over. Please, just go."

Blinking back tears of his own, Nikolai left, and did not look back.

"What's wrong?" Robin asked, leaning on the rail of the balcony. Nikolai was staring down at the river below, melancholy of heart and demeanour.

"I was just remembering. Cecilia her name was. The first – the only – person I ever wanted to turn."

Robin frowned. "Did you tell me about her?"

"Many times."

Robin moved to stare down at the turgid water. "Yes, I remember now. This was years ago though."

"Yes. She'll be long dead now, even if she lived beyond most mortal spans." Nikolai swallowed. "I should have turned her."

Sometimes he thought it would have been better for them both if he'd never laid eyes on her at all.

Sad. But I'm glad that Nikolai didn't turn Cecelia against her will. I wonder what kind of life she had with her terrible family.

This is evocative and lonely - poor Nikolai.

Oh, this is so sad...

They're both so tormented... I'm having feelings now.

But it's a very well-written piece, bb! :D You say so much with so little words! I love it! :D
