Legend of the Seeker ship manifesto

My ship manifesto for
legendland.
Cara/Zedd: He's a wizard, she's a Mord'Sith can I make this any more obvious.

shamelessly manipped by me
Top five reasons why I ship them
He's a wizard, she's a Mord'sith. On one hand, it could be a case of opposites attract. On the other, there's a certain complementary aspect to their opposing natures, where his wisdom and magic are counterfoils to her single mindedness and combat skills.

Zedd is a man with a strong sexual appetite, one that has not diminished with age. We hear him talk about sex directly or indirectly on several occasions. Cara also has a strong sex drive. Bisexual and with a wealth of experience and distinct lack of naiveté, she would be a good match for Zedd. There's probably not a kink she could mention that would make the wizard blush, and, and in turn, nothing Zedd could suggest that would make Cara do more than raise an eyebrow in mild surprise or (probably) interest.

Zedd seems to be more of the love them and leave them type, not the sort of person to ask for relationship advice; we rarely hear him mention Richard's grandmother, for example. Zedd doesn't want to be tied down.
Cara's ultimate devotion lies with the serving Lord Rahl, but beyond this loyalty she does not seem to long for quiet domesticity the way that Richard seems to, and she does not seek a monogamous partner – in fact a deleted scene highlights her distaste for her alternate universe counterpart as widowed mother and schoolteacher.
Therefore, this would be an open relationship. There would be no jealousy in a Cara/Zedd partnership. It's another way they complement each other. (More personally, I have especial love for het pairings like this one that don't seem destined to end in marriage and babies.)
Both of them have lost people close to them. For Zedd this includes Richard's grandmother, Zedd's mother and father, and Tarralyn – Zedd's daughter. For Cara this includes Leo (shortly after consummating their relationship), Cara's father, mother, and (at least as far as we know) her son. Cara also had feelings for Darken Rahl, and that she and Zedd have both turned their backs on him is another trait they share. In many ways, Cara and Zedd can understand each other.
Most of all I love their banter. They seem to love to bicker with each other, and they wouldn't bother teasing and stirring if they hated each other. I like to think their sniping is a way of showing affection.

Bonus: I don't actually much like ship portmanteau names but this ship is/would be Zara which sounds lovely. Or Caredd, which sounds like an actual Welsh word; as such, I looked it up. Wiktionary has a close match in 'coire' meaning crime/sin and Word Gumbo lists it specifically as meaning 'crime'. I don't think Cara and Zedd would object to their union being described as 'sinful' but rather take it as a compliment!
Top Cara/Zedd moments in canon
Light: Cara thinks Zedd is dead and tries to comfort Kahlan with the thought that the "Wizard fought bravely". It's clear she's come to respect him and perhaps even to be saddened by his passing.

Desecrated: Richard and Kahlan lead a dance and as others join in, Zedd tries to get Cara to dance:
Zedd: "Care to join them?"
Cara: "I'd rather fight gars!"
Note: I don't think she refused because she doesn't like Zedd, but because the idea of a Mord'Sith dancing in public is mortifying. Why isn't there fic about them dancing in private? (Maybe there is, let me know! Or else I'll add it to my ridiculously long list of fics I want to write but probably never will!) Anyway, this is a nice example of their adversarial yet affectionate relationship.
Princess: Zedd and Cara do dance. Sort of :D

Perdition: After Leo's death, it is Zedd who puts a comforting hand on Cara's shoulder.

Tears: Zedd and Cara have to work together and he gives her advice and support throughout.

Unbroken : Zedd's desire to save Cara seems to go beyond needing to put the world to rights; he seems to want to save the world along with saving Cara.

Tears: It's a very shippy episode all around and deserves two mentions! My top moment for this couple takes place near the start of the episode after the Spell of Undoing finally works out. Zedd's desperate "Where's Cara?" is followed by a wide smile as she strides over the sand towards him.

Date: 2012-08-20 10:14 pm (UTC)You're making me ship Zedd and Cara more than ever :) I like 'Zara' as a ship name, or an actual name, too. And definitely agreed that their bickering is affectionate. They don't really start doing it until Zedd uses Wizard's Fire with Cara right there and she doesn't turn it against him and he decides to trust her. Which is another nice moment ;)
I really love that part in Tears where they work together, too. Zedd seems so supportive. It's one of the times I like him better than I usually do!
Also I'm impressed with how well you put everything together :D Great post :D

Date: 2012-08-23 06:28 pm (UTC)I know I missed a ton of great canon moments because I didn't have time to go through all the episodes again (and my memory can be faulty/biased!) so I had to try and pick those I remembered. I wish I'd managed to include some more examples of their bickering :D
"Tears" is the ultimate shippy episode for them I think, because they're left alone for so long during it :D
