Poem for writerverse

Title: (un)Real
Fandom: Original
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 329
Prompt: For the
writerverse sestina/sonnet picture prompt Eternal
Summary: Illusions, reality, eternity or lack thereof.
Warnings: None
Not going to lie, I took the picture prompt for the sestina fill and picked words that seemed appropriate themes but were increasingly difficult to re-use as the poem went on (I did not plan ahead which is probably a bad idea when it comes to a sestina). It seems somewhat highfalutin to me and without the constraints of the form it would have been half the length and more to the point.
(un)Real
Nothing in this world is truly eternal
Or unchanged. Stillness is merely an illusion
A waking dream
With no connection to reality
Between imagination and the physical world is a great distance
Unconquerable even by love
Or maybe conquerable only by love
If love can be said to be eternal
For love can overcome distance
And if love is only an illusion
Then maybe it is at least better than harsh reality
A blessed dream
One person's nightmare is another's dream
One person's fear is another's love
Yet we try to constrain our world, to define reality
To say what things are, to make our understanding eternal
When we can only say how things were and are, predications are another form of illusion
Guesses at best, attempts to gaze into the infinite distance
But if we spend too much time looking into the distance
How will we know what is real and what is a dream
How can we tell truth from illusion
It is easier to romanticise things, to fall in love
When they seem ethereal and eternal
Something desirable, something unlike our current reality
What is reality
Between our senses and our imaginations is an immeasurable distance
Time itself is unreal, both fleeting and eternal
We see this when we dream
And when time drags in dullness but speeds by in times we love
That's another illusion
Some say the whole world is merely an illusion
Some insist only on accepting what they deem reality
Somewhere inbetween we can experience highs and lows, hate and love
See that person in the distance
Are they moving towards you or away and is that true or just a dream
And does any of it matter when nothing is eternal
What is the nature of illusion and how can we keep our distance
Would we rather embrace reality than risk following a dream
In compromise we cherish the notion of love, which is real and beyond real, constant and eternal
