Summary: Full moons can be romantic under the right circumstances.
Notes: Third fic in this verse, but it's set much further on than the previous ones. Also I don't write much romance so I don't know how romantic this is.
Warnings: None
"Where's Tamara?" Jake asked as he came into the kitchen.
Rae, loading the dishwasher, glanced over her shoulder. "Outside. She said she needed some air. You finished with that?"
Jake stepped around Myka who was lying at Rae's feet and handed over his empty mug. "Maybe I'll go check on her."
"You like her, don't you?"
Jake nodded. "She's nice."
Rae sighed. "I mean you like her."
Jake ignored her and went to the back door, sliding it open carefully. Myka got to her feet and padded after him.
Tamara was pacing the decking, both hands wrapped around her own mug of hot chocolate.
"You all right?" Jake asked as he stepped out onto the cool night air.
She nodded. "I was just looking at the moon. It's full tonight."
Myka bounded off to check the perimeter, her white tail visible long after the rest of her blended into the darkness. Jake followed Tamara's gaze up to the moon, high and bright, like a polished button against the midnight blue sky.
"They say full moons are romantic," he said, not sure why he said it, nor where'd he got the idea.
"Hmm. But what about the werewolves?" Tamara said and he couldn't tell from her tone if she was being serious. Probably not but he played along.
"I'm sure Myka would warn us."
Tamara put the mug down on a stone column which had ivy wound carefully around it. "Does she howl at the moon?"
"I don't think so. She howls at sirens though. It's a malamute thing."
Tamara smiled and Jake grinned back. God, he loved when she smiled.
"I wish I could howl at the moon," Tamara said suddenly. "Let out all my frustrations. Be primal and free."
Jake shrugged. "Why don't you? Michael and Rae won't mind and there's no-one else to hear."
Tamara shook her head, embarrassed. "I couldn't."
Jake tipped back his head and did his best wolf howl. Myka ran back and gazed at him, puzzled. Tamara laughed and attempted a howl of her own. Myka came over and jumped up to nudge her.
"I don't think Myka's impressed," Tamara laughed and Jake shooed the dog away so Tamara could regain her balance. "Maybe she thinks I'm in trouble. I don't think I howl very well."
A strand of hair fell across her face and Jake reached out to tuck it gently behind her ear. Tamara met his gaze. Slowly he leant over, tipping his head. Their lips brushed together. Tamara returned the kiss for one wonderful second. Then she took a step backward, her expression troubled.
"I'm sorry," Jake said automatically. "I shouldn't have done that. Miles –"
"I wasn't thinking about Miles," Tamara said, which surprised Jake as much as it pleased him. "I was thinking about Michael and how it's inappropriate."
That was going to be a long conversation. Trying to convince her that no-one expected miracles from her, that just her being here was giving them hope, was an uphill struggle. So Jake shook his head but said nothing. He held out his hand and Myka came over to be petted. Tamara reached over to stroke Myka's fur and for a few minutes they lavished affection on the appreciative dog. Then Tamara shivered.
"Perhaps we should go inside," Jake said. She nodded and led the way, pausing to retrieve her empty mug.
"What do you think, Myka?" Jake whispered. "You like Tamara?"
Myka gave a solemn look and then headed inside after Tamara. Jake followed, the memory of the kiss fresh in his mind.

Date: 2012-03-20 09:31 pm (UTC)Full moons are ambiguous, aren't they? Romance versus werewolves ;)
I like the hint of a secret Tamara's keeping, too :)

Date: 2012-03-23 12:05 pm (UTC)I still don't know what I'm doing with this verse but Jake definitely likes Tamara in a romantic way so there may be more romance in the future. Thanks for reading and commenting :D
