Snarky review of 'Listener' in which Toby Logan is sadly absent, Renn annoys me, and Zedd gets a makeover.

Our heroes see a young boy being captured. Turns out the boy is a Listener, ie a telepath.

No, that's Toby Logan, the telepath from the Canadian tv show 'The Listener'. Although Toby would be preferable because the listener in question is Renn. And Renn is kind of a brat. And I hate bratty kids.

So Richard and Kahlan rescue Renn and Zedd gives himself up as a First Wizard and therefore decent prize in lieu of the boy. Only he thinks he'll be recognized so he dyes his hair with magic.
(Strangely he doesn't bother to change his appearance when he poses as an entertainer in Puppeteer. Plot hole of doom ahoy.)

The scenery is always gorgeous. And distracts from Renn who wants to go and serve a noble and get treated like a prince and threatening to spill all of Kahlan and Richard's secrets. I mentioned he's kind of a brat, right?

Even Kahlan's patience is wearing thin judging by her expression, and when Miss OMGBABBIZES is annoyed with a kid, you know he's trouble. She still does her best to help him though and take him back to his father – rumour is his father sold him to the D'Harans. Kahlan, quite rightly, is having none of that and offers to take him to the Sisters of the Light.

And Renn runs off and Richard and Kahlan are seemingly all 'I thought you were watching him' which doesn't bode well for future R/K offspring.

See, Kahlan's all mad again.

Meanwhile Zedd is using his staff to leave behind a trail of flowers so the others can find him later.

He's also rocking the dark hair :D

And Kahlan and Richard continue to struggle to deal with Renn. There's another kidnap attempt and then his father shows up and then Renn's father still turns him over to the D'Harans and Renn's all 'Yo, I've been trying to do this all frakking episode'. IDEK. Let's go see what Zedd is doing instead.

Zedd looks all wise and You Shall Not Pass. He turns a prisoner who is due to be executed into a bird so the guy can escape. Go Zedd. Unfortunately he gets caught and his hands are bound so he can't use any more Powerful Magic. Not so good.

Richard and Kahlan show up and Renn actually helps them by freeing Zedd so it's three against all the D'Harans. Our heroes are of course victorious and Zedd even turns the bird back into a man. Also he soon goes back to his natural white hair.

Renn says he did not tell Richard and Kahlan that his father was lying because he was afraid his father would hurt them or some nonsense. Richard can handle hordes of bad guys. One nasty little peasant is nothing and a decent Listener would know that. Whatever. Renn gets sent off, again, FINALLY, to the Sisters of the Light. Look how relieved Kahlan looks in the picture. (At the end of season two we find out the Sisters haven't been very kind to Renn so this whole thing was a pretty rubbish idea anyway.)
Renn tells Richard that Kahlan feels 'the same way' about him as Richard does about her, for all the good that will do.

Oh, and no longer a bird guy tells Zedd some useful information about troops gathering at a city that Zedd believes was destroyed. Naturally they're going to go check this out next episode.
Blah. This gets a Two out of Five and that's mostly because Zedd gets to play dress up and be awesome.

Lovely picspam :D

Date: 2012-03-03 05:42 pm (UTC)There are people who loved this episode and think Renn is a little darling. I have no idea how it's the same episode I watched.
If in doubt, do crack :D Thanks for the review :D
