"I don't get it," Harry said.

"What part?" Ellen asked. "The bit with about the originals or the thing about the hybrid?"

"No, why the girl –"

"Elena."

"Why Elena has to choose." Harry waved his hands around, impatient. "There's dark and broody guy and blond and needy guy and she thinks she has to choose. Why?"

"Brooding," James put in mildly, as returned from the kitchen and handed Harry another beer. "Broody is for chickens."

Ellen glanced at Harry, who could do dark and brooding quite well and James, who was blond and well, perhaps not needy but sensitive, certainly. She hadn’t got Elena's long straight brown locks, but she was pleased enough with her own ash blonde curls.

"Anyway," Harry said, refusing to acknowledge the correction, "why doesn't she just say, 'hey, who's up for a threesome', and have done with it?"

"Someone suggested that to her early on," James said. "I can't remember who. Caroline, I think."

"They're too jealous," Ellen said. "To share her. And despite the vampires and all the other questionable content there's this undercurrent of some sort of purity that should exist in love. Oh, and also they're brothers."

They all thought about this for a moment.

"What's Elena doing now?" Harry asked.

"That's not Elena, it's Katherine, her doppelgänger. Are you even watching this?" Ellen asked.

"Not for the plot."

James gave a long suffering sigh.

"Anyway, I thought incest was the new thing," Harry said. "There's that show where Sarah Connor's banging her brother, and that one about the randy pope."

"Yes, but those are cable shows," Ellen said patiently. "And actually those are both brother-sister rather than brother-brother examples. Either way incest is too touchy a subject for a show aimed at teenagers. Besides, love triangles are always popular."

"Because women love to see men fighting over them," Harry observed.

"Drink your beer and shut up," Ellen said.

When the credits rolled, Harry said, "I can share, you know. Just saying."

Ellen looked at Jack. His eyes widened and he coughed nervously.

"I – er- well…of course I'm not the jealous type."

So far, so good. Ellen tipped her head. "A true threesome isn't just Elena and Stefan and Elena and Damon. It's Stefan and Damon too. Hence the incest."

Harry shrugged and, before James could protest, pulled him close and planted a kiss on his lips.

"So," Harry said, returning his attention to Ellen. "What are we watching next?"

Ellen turned anxious eyes to James. "James?"

"Haven," he said faintly, and then, finding his composure, "with the blonde FBI agent Audrey and reliable deputy Nathan and snarky smuggler Duke. Three way attraction heavily implied."

Ellen smiled. "Sounds perfect."

Notes: The show where 'Sarah Connor is banging her brother' is 'Game of Thrones' where Lena Heady who played Sarah Connor in the 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles 'portrays Cersei Lannister who is indeed having an incestuous relationship with her brother, Jaime.
The show 'with the randy pope' refers to 'The Borgias' in which there have been plenty of incestuous hints regarding the relationship between Cesare and his sister Lucrezia, although the relationship was unconsummated during season one.
'Haven' strongly implies Audrey/Nathan but with plenty of Audrey/Duke moments and a number of Duke/Nathan exchanges

I enjoyed the banter about the various couplings on the television shows. LOL at the reference to Sarah (Cersei) Connor.

I have read so many biographies about the Borgias - I wish I could get that show, but I don't subscribe to Showtime and it's not on Netflix. I may have break down and buy the DVD's.
