Aura was clearly using her allure or whatever it was she called it because there wasn't a single person, male or female, who didn't glance her way for longer than was necessary as she sashayed past them on her way to his office.

She was wearing a long red coat – blood red, of course. She smiled at him, a wide predatory smile that was no less threatening for the lack of visible fangs. It was cloudy outside and after three pm, and Carter wondered just how much of her supernatural power she could bring to the fore if she really wanted to.

"Very nice," she said, running an appraising eye over the office. "I don't understand why you don't like it."

He'd explained it to her once and he wasn't about to start repeating himself. She and Nikolai could be so frustrating. He never knew if they were toying with him or sometimes forgot things or just hadn't been paying attention to his petty human concerns.

"What are you doing here?"

She pouted. "That's not very friendly. And after I came down here with some information for you."

He leaned forward. "About the attacks?" he asked in a low voice.

She shrugged and perched herself on the edge of his desk, facing away from him. Carter watched Jones staring so intently at Aura through the open door as he walked past that he barrelled straight into his desk, splashing coffee all over himself.

"Aura." Carter's voice sounded cool and calm to his ears. Good.

She looked over her shoulder at him. "Last night I had a rather interesting conversation with someone who knew the first victim. He told me a secret."

I bet he did, Carter thought. Two minutes under last night's full moon with her hypnotic skill and the man had probably been telling Aura his bank account details and begging her to run away with him.

"Which is?" There'd be a price he'd pay for this information, of course.

"Come with me," Aura said. "I want him to tell you for himself. So you know I'm not lying."

Carter sighed. He didn't really have a choice.
