Title: Copper Dagger - outline
Fandom: Original Fic
Rating: PG
Word Count: 270 approx
Prompt: For the 30 days of fiction meme prompt #3 write a query letter for a fantasy (any kind) novel
Summary: Elspeth wanted a cat, but she's got a dragon. This is the least of her problems.
Warnings: None
Notes: I'm not thrilled with this, but it fits the prompt and it is a rough outline for the novel; and it gave me some new ideas/things to think about while writing it, so it was worth doing.
Dear Sir/Madam
For your consideration, the children's fantasy novel, Copper Dagger:
Elspeth wanted a cat, but she's got a dragon. This is the least of her problems.
Elspeth is an eight year old princess with a pet dragon named Calico. She's convinced she's cursed, being both terrified of the dark, and lacking in confidence. It's a sorry state for a future queen, and no matter how much reading she does, Elspeth can find no way to lift the curse.
There's a prophecy concerning a magical object, the Copper Dagger. Whoever finds it will become the General of the Army. Elspeth is convinced that if she can find the dagger, she will become the General of the Army and, she reasons, gain the confidence necessary to hold such an important post.
Elspeth's mother disappeared when Elspeth was just a baby, leaving her in the incompetent hands of her kindly but rather muddle-headed father, the king, and the rather more capable hands of Colonel Montenegro. The king is quite happy to let Elspeth go and look for the dagger, so long as the colonel accompanies his daughter, and so, with the sarcastic Calico and the colonel's most trust lieutenant in tow, they set off on the most important quest of Elspeth's young life.
Her journey to find the dagger may lead her to something else entirely, however. The Dark Forests of the South is where her mother was found wandering all those years ago, before she married the king, and is rumoured to be the last place the queen was seen. Perhaps Elspeth can find some clue to her mother's disappearance.
And then there's the vampire demon, who wants the dagger for himself, and will stop at nothing to take it from Elspeth, if and when she finds it. It's a lot for any young girl to handle.
Yours faithfully

Date: 2011-10-05 05:34 pm (UTC)Elspeth is such a great character - and I'm sure there's some important secret about her mother.

Date: 2011-10-06 10:15 pm (UTC)Interested in how the vampire demon will figure into a children's story that so far seems rather light-hearted and whimsical, but then I've only had a glimpse of this universe so far. And, of course, looking back on them as an adult, most fairy tales are pretty terrifying.

Date: 2011-10-07 11:44 am (UTC)Actually, I think the 'Evil Vampire Demon, who is inflicted with domineering life-partner -- has sworn to kill them and take the item' is more of an almost comical character, only trying to steal the dagger to please their life-partner and not taking in pleasure in the quest at all.
