14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
I have problems deciding on ratings and tend to rate almost anything non-explicit as PG-13, just in case. I worry about using NC-17 when R/15 might suffice – people get annoyed when they expect very explicit sexual scenes and there aren't any – but I also worry about people complaining it was too explicit for a lower rating.
I'm never surprised; in fact, if I'm planning on including sexual scenarios it can be a struggle for me to write it as explicitly as I think it needs to be. If it's for my own purposes, I might use a 'fade-out' but if I'm filling a prompt that seems very shippy in nature I'll try to write more detailed descriptions of the foreplay at least. It depends on a lot of factors, but I think I can honestly say I never write G if I'm trying for higher nor NC-17 when I'm aiming for PG.

My biggest problem is actually how to rate for violence, I think - if the sex is explicit, that's NC-17, but there are some things that seem like they should be rated just as high for violence. Mostly I just use R and warnings, but I find the incongruity between how high one rates for sex scenes and the humdrum attitude to violence irritating.
