Something I've not even talked about on Tumblr, I don't think: I've started (obliquely) following the manga One Piece through watching review / discussion channels on YouTube. I totally avoided being intimidated by the length, by not giving a flying whatsit about starting at the beginning. I got into it when my one of my favorite sea shanty / folk bands did a cover of the English translation of Bink no Sake, and I wanted some context for the madness. So I just dove into the fan wiki, and, out of curiosity, looked to see what the current manga chapter/anime episode was at the time. And I've been following along from that point on ever since. I don't have to worry about missing necessary context or plot developments from the beginning, because for the fans who make the videos, drawing connections between almost 30 years of story details is their favorite hobby.
A deepening pet peeve: Foods being sold as "Healthy Substitutes for [X]," for whatever the health kick trend of the day is, instead of just being celebrated in their own right. It leads people to expect a different flavor / texture than what they get, which leads them to decide that a food tastes disgusting, but if it were in a different context, it would be delicious. And then, worst of all, when that particular trend is no longer trendy, that perfectly good food practically disappears from store shelves, and the price skyrockets.
A case in point: I've recently discovered nutritional yeast. It's sold and promoted as "A Parmesan Alternative for Vegans." It's good. But it's not Parmesan. I'd say, if I were to put in in a family tree of flavors, that it's a first cousin to Parmesan cheese (rather than its twin) on one side, and, on the other side, a cousin to those instant Raman noodle flavor packets (with a lot less sodium than either). It doesn't work at all as a binding agent the way the cheese does, though. I like to sprinkle it on salads already tossed in dressing (so that it will stick), to add some protein and umami.
Lately, I've been haunted by a Grimm's fairy tale that I've tried (three or four times) to rewrite / fix during my NaNoWriMo Days (which I have since disavowed completely, due to that organization's embrace of generative A.I.), and been thoroughly demoralized by each time, at the end. I don't know if I'm really drawn to try again, though, or if my mind is just retreating back to it as a distraction from other, real-world stressors I'd rather not think about.
At the end of last year, and the start of this one, I decided to get back to my love for the character, and murder mystery stories of, Lord Peter Wimsey. I'd watched the 1970 TV adaptations by the BBC on Masterpiece Theater as teen, and subsequently read a bunch of short stories. But there's a whole lot I never read. Back in January, I started reading the third novel, Unnatural Death, over at Project Gutenberg. But real life rudely interrupted me in the middle of Chapter Two. And I'm just now getting bak to it. Anyone want to join me in a read-along?

The Problem of Fiction ~ Marie Ponsot

She always writes poems. This summer

she’s starting a novel. It’s in trouble already.

The characters are easy—a girl

and her friend who is a girl

and the boy down the block with his first car,

an older boy, sixteen, who sometimes

these warm evenings leaves his house to go dancing

in dressy clothes though it’s still light out.

The girl has a brother who has lots of friends,

is good in math, and just plain good which

doesn’t help the story. The story

should have rescues & escapes in it

which means who’s the bad guy; he couldn’t be

the brother or the grandpa or the father either,

or even the boy down the block with his first car.

People in novels have to need something,

she thinks, that it takes about

two hundred pages to get.

She can’t imagine that. Nothing

she needs can be got; if it could

she’d go get it: the answer to nightmares;

a mother who’d be proud of her; doing things

a mother could be proud of; having hips

& knowing how to squeal at the beach laughing

when the boy down the block picked her up & carried her

& threw her in the water. If she’d laughed

squealing he might still take her swimming

& his mother wouldn’t say she’s crazy, she would

not have got her teeth into his shoulder till

well yes she bit him, and the marks

lasted & lasted, his mother said so,

but that couldn’t be in a novel.

She’ll never squeal laughing, she’d never

not bite him, she hates cute girls, she hates

boys who like them. Biting is embarrassing

and wrong & she has no intention of doing it again

but she would if he did if he dared,

and there’s no story if there’s no hope of change.

Now there's a poem after my own grizzled heart. I've played - off and on - over the years with this Idea. That one could pen a poem to preface or inspire a prose piece.

Anyone care to try this as a prompt? Take a plot bunny/character you've been holding near and dear but have not been able to translate into fic just yet - it could be original it could be fandom, but I think we should focus on original writing if we can - and write a poem. THEN we can try to write the exploded fic.

The Myth of Mobility: Why Faster Cities Often Leave People Behind

When cities measure mobility by speed, they often make everyday life harder to reach.

In many large urban areas, particularly those built during the late twentieth century, everyday necessities have been separated from residential life. Homes are clustered in residential zones while shops, restaurants, libraries, and workplaces are placed far away along commercial corridors or in large retail centers. The result is a city where nearly every basic activity requires driving. On paper, this appears to increase mobility. In reality, it often reduces it.

For people who cannot drive easily, such as older adults, children, individuals with disabilities, or those who cannot afford a car, the distance between daily needs becomes a barrier. Even for those who can drive, environments designed for cars are not always designed for people. Vast parking lots, wide arterial roads, and enormous retail spaces can be physically exhausting and psychologically overwhelming to navigate. True mobility should not be measured only by how fast people can travel, but by how easily they can reach the things they need.
