For the [livejournal.com profile] a_war_of_roses "Fandom History 101" challenge; 2/5 The Borgias

Title: The Borgias
Format: TV Show
Era/Location: 16th century Italy
Brief Summary: When Rodrigo Borgia finagles his way to the Papacy, his son Cesare is forced to become a cardinal rather than the warrior he wants to be, younger son Juan becomes a lacklustre leader, and, to Cesare's horror, Lucrezia is forced into a violent marriage with a Sforza for political reasons. Cesare forms an alliance with assassin Micheletto and they do their best to protect the family from the myriad threats, and Rome from her enemies.
Why you like it/would recommend it: Cesare (Francois Arnaud) is amazing and the chemistry he has with Lucrezia (Holliday Grainger) is off the charts. Cesare's character development is second only to Lucrezia's as she goes from naïve young woman to ruthless opponent, while Juan's selfishness, cruelty, and short-sightedness proves his downfall. Rodrigo is an interesting character – sometimes genuinely spiritual, sometimes pure plotter, and willing to put women in positions of great power. The triumvirate of Lucrezia, her mother, and her father's mistress Farnese is a high point when they work for the good of the Roman poor, and the relationships between Cesare and Lucrezia, Lucrezia and Micheletto, Micheletto and Cesare, are convincing and a pleasure to watch, and Micheletto is a canonically gay character.*
Another one not for historical purists but a show built around fascinating characters.

(*arguably bisexual but the only woman we see him bed is one he does so before killing her to frame a third party for the murder; it was business and not pleasure)

For the [livejournal.com profile] a_war_of_roses "Fandom History 101" challenge; 1/5 Da Vinci's Demons

Title: Da Vinci's Demons
Format: TV Show
Era/Location: Renaissance Italy
Brief Summary: A fantastical look at the early life of Leonardo da Vinci and his quest for a mysterious book
Why you like it/would recommend it: The characters and the actors – Tom Riley as Leo and Blake Ritson as primary antagonist Girolamo Riario are top notch. In season one Leo's friends (Zoroaster, Nico Machievelli, Vanessa) work with him, while season two takes Leo, Zo, Nico and Riario on a voyage to the New World, where Leo and Riario have to work together and a flashback to Riario and his cousin, Lucrezia's, past changed my opinion of them for the better. Season 3 made some poor choices in terms of plot over characters and relationships but Season 2 in particular is golden. Not for historical purists but if you like a touch of fantasy in your historical media this is a good one.

It's been eight months since, in addition to my personal/fandom blogs and social media, I set up my professional offerings. I write non-fiction articles and meta, flash fiction and poetry, and I'm working on two novels. I maintain a number of sites linked to my professional name/id, lmdee (at some sites as itslmdee).
For new followers, or those with new social media accounts at any of these sites, it seems an opportune time to remind you of these sites with the hopes that you'll follow some of them if you have not already done so.

As such, I'm re-posting the information post I made when I first set up these accounts.

Thank you to everyone who has already liked/subscribed to any of my professional sites. These are not the same as my fannish sites which you may already be subscribed to. I maintain the Tumblr, Twitter, Pinterest, etc, separately to my meridianrose accounts.

"Fandom Snowflake Challenge - to remind us why we love fandom and to recharge our fannish batteries."

[livejournal.com profile] mmom is celebrating its tenth anniversary next month and would love for you to join in the fun.

The Merry Month of Masturbation is a comm with a challenge: post a fic every day of May, a fic that features masturbation (doing it, talking about it, watching it, etc). And there are no rules beyond the fic being at least 100 words and involving masturbation; if you only write one fic, that's fine too. If you don't finish and post until June, that's okay – either way, you can add your fics to the AO3 collection.

Want inspiration, or have a need to read something in particular? Check out the prompts page where you can make or fill a prompt.

And if fanfic isn't your thing, at least consider some original work during May that touches on the subject. Masturbation is a safe way to explore sexuality and fulfil sexual needs, but has been much neglected by mainstream and non-mainstream media.

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn at Valentine's Day Game (in eight years, no, I never did come up with a better name for this.)
Hey all - last year people sent over 10K words worth of love to this thing, and I think that's an effort well worth repeating.

This is the EIGHTH Valentine's Day Game, and yours truly has finally, finally gotten smarter about how to run this. Well, that, and google has come up with tools to make me not go blind coding, so we're going to do it a bit differently this year.

The Valentine's Game 411:

You have a little over two weeks, until Wednesday, February 12th, to send me your submissions.

It's not time-consuming at all, and here's what you do:

♥ Pick 1-14 people in fandom, and come up with a word or a phrase or short sentence to describe them (or hey, make icons like people have done in the past, do whatever you want, I'll go with it), or just say something about why you like them/enjoy reading them/why you're happy they're around. (If you're in hockey fandom and you want to send Valentines like these going around, that's totally fine and I can include them!)

Put in the names/comments for your Valentines on this googleform, and I will compile a great, huge list of what everyone's sent to me and post it on Valentine's Day. It's like a Secret Admirer/Valentine's Party and I will not be posting or telling anyone who sent me what at all. For example, if I were to get four separate comments describing Random Internet User, I'd just put all of the words/phrases in a list and post them for each Internet user that someone sent me phrases on. Here are the past years so you can see it in action.

...make sense? Sound like fun? If so, go fill out that form - you do NOT have to have 14 people; just fill out however many people you want, but please be sure to follow the instructions at the top of the form to make it easier for me to code this.

Feel free to spread the word--it might get some people aware that they can spread some love in your direction and YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHO and thus FEEL LIKE BEING EVEN NICER TO EVERYONE FOR LIKE, A WHOLE DAY!

Rules! (Because everything must have rules, even V-Day projects)

1) The google form will close sometime on February 12th. So fill it out, you know. Before then.

2) If for some reason you do not get love in this post? Not my fault, as I just compile. I? Am so the Compiling Girl. You will need to blame your various f-lists for not giving a shout-out to the majesty that is you.

This is about making people *you* like happy, about giving them something to smile and feel fuzzy about. It's not intended to make anyone feel left out, but it comes with the territory and that is something I hope everybody understands and is at peace with. <3

IN CONCLUSION: SEND ME THINGS.

A few challenge and comm pimps in case anyone is interested in any of them.

The hurt/comfort bingo amnesty challenge for May is dedicated to small fandoms - here

Fandom Walks Into A Bar: A Multifandom Crossover Ficathon – You pick a character who will walk into a bar. Then you pick 1-4 other fandoms you feel comfortable creating a fanwork in and the mod will roll the dice and give you a character for your chosen character to meet in that bar. (The bar is metaphorical, as is the walking, and just about everything else. Think of it as a meet cute for two unlikely characters.) Details here

The characters over 40 fest is open for prompting - details here

Month of June - Sign-ups are now open for The Month of June, a month-long fest focused on the character of June Ellington from White Collar, because she is made of class and awesome. Details here

A f/f comment ficathon here

A request for someone to help co-mod a fannish bingo challenge with a focus on creating fan work about all kinds of female relationships. Details here
