Freedom: The Further Adventures of Saffron
Synopsis
Saffron, she of many names and disguises, is still roaming the 'verse, conning and stealing her way through life. She hears about a great treasure, a jewellery box, and is determined to steal it. She worms her way into the life of the owner of the box, Max, and plans to take her prize. However when she opens the box she is given a cryptic vision which will guide her to an even greater treasure, something that can change the fate of the 'verse.
Max is furious that Saffron somehow opened the box he's been studying for years. As he threatens Saffron, another member of the household staff, Cordell, saves her and they flee together. He has a ship and a crew and Saffron agrees to temporarily join them so they can work together to find the great treasure. At first she intends to ditch them as soon as possible, but events soon persuade her to stay.
Meanwhile Max, wounded, but alive and furious, engages a bounty hunter to track down Saffron and extract what she knows, by any means necessary.
Characters
SAFFRON – character from "Firefly" played by Christina Hendricks, whom the spin off is centred on.
MAX – (Colm Feore) owner of the mysterious box which he's spent fifteen years studying but has been unable to open. He believes the box contains the secret to eternal life. He's furious at being duped by Saffron and cheated of his chance to find the treasure, and hires a bounty hunter to help him track her down.
DARA – (Tabrett Bethell) is a deadly bounty hunter with cybernetic implants that give her increased speed, strength, and accuracy. However the experimental devices have taken their toll and left her with just five years to live. Max hires her, promising that he'll share the secret of eternal life with her.
CORDELL – (Daniel Gillies) served the Alliance loyally until he grew increasingly disgusted by the treatment of colonists. Speaking out about atrocities he saw committed by Alliance soldiers got him framed for murder, and, like Iris, he was forced to go on the run, stealing a ship from the Alliance and renaming it Freedom. He'd heard a rumour Max was running a slavery ring – which was false – and posed as a member of the household staff to investigate, which is how he came to rescue Saffron.
IRIS – (Archie Panjabi) a skilled pilot and martial artist, Iris was once the bodyguard to a spoilt Alliance teenager, son of a powerful council member. When he tried to rape his girlfriend, Iris kicked the crap out of him. She not only lost her job but had to flee before she could be arrested. Hard-drinking, foul-mouthed, charming when she wants to be, disarmingly gorgeous, Iris is not to be underestimated. She met Cordell in the midst of a barroom brawl in which they were the only ones left standing.
FREDDIE – (Kevin Alejandro) properly named Alfred Forthingay the Third, was forced by his parents to study medicine. In time, "Freddie" became a brilliant surgeon, but his real love lies in engineering because "machines are easier to diagnose than people and they don't sue if you screw up". A rather bizarre series of events led him to become Freedom's engineer and, given the scrapes the crew find themselves in, the ship's doctor.
Other crew and recurring characters would be added later.
