"You are coming to the play, aren't you?" Aura asked.
Carter hesitated. He remembered what happened last time she'd talked him into something out of his comfort zone, namely the costume party. Where Robin had died. And later come back to life. (Sometimes he wasn't sure which was the worst part about that evening.)
"It'll be fun," Nikolai promised with one of his dazzling grins that probably meant he was using his Allure despite Carter's near-total immunity to it. "It'll be cultured."
"Not making it sound any more attractive," Carter said.
Aura leaned over to him. "The mayor will be there."
Dammit. The play was now not only the sort of high-brow affair he was supposed to attend to hobnob at, but the mayor himself in attendance meant Carter could not afford to skip out on it. Showing up might not get him noticed or impress the mayor but his absence would certainly be noted and disapproved of.
Carter swore violently for about twenty seconds before he was calm enough to give the obvious lie, "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
He comforted himself with the though that this wasn't a random party but a ticketed event at the best theatre in town, in broad daylight.
Of course, when Aura and Nikolai were involved, things never did go smoothly.
