I'm really thrilled that you read this :D You probably did catch all the deliberate references - I was combining canon Merlin with my recollections of Arthurian legend along with my own twist on things, and so there were some obvious choices that made sense to all three of those POVs. Avalon and the apples was a major theme - and I'm so glad that the last part comes across like that, both real and unreal.

I have serious issues with the show and it's portrayal of women and paganism and the current rhetoric of 'evil priestesses of the Old Religion'. But I love Morgana and hope for her redemption, and I love the light hearted moments, and I love the knights both individually, especially Gwaine and Leon, and as a brotherhood with deep love alongside the teasing that only true friends and family can get away with.

Morgana fascinates me because I've read accounts that suggest she was originally a goddess, demoted to a Sister of Avalon - though one of nine, a sacred number - and further demonised as an evil witch and mother of Mordred who is fated to kill Arthur. But she could never be quite erased, and thus appears as the leader of the women of Avalon who take Arthur to his healing rest until the time of England's greatest need :D

I have meta to write about magic in the media and in Merlin in particular but I never quite muster up the impetus. Maybe soon :D

Someone over at ff.net asked me about the Green Knight and I politely suggested googling (no urls allowed or I'd have given them some) Sir Gawain and the Green Knight which they told me they'd do - yay for educating the younger readers :D - and someone else really wanted a sequel dealing with the appearance of the Green Knight. And I'm bad with sequels but I'm really quite taken with the idea, not least because I'd have an excuse to read the myths for myself again - and now I know you're a fan of Arthurian myth, I have someone else to discuss theories with :D

Long comment is rambly. Thanks again for commenting, it really means a lot that you took time out to read something that's not directly one of your fandoms. You know how much I value your opinion :D
