Writing prompt
May. 20th, 2015 09:00 pmI've mentioned http://www.reddit.com/r/WritingPrompts/ before; I don't belong to reddit but this particular url was recommended by Get Your Words Out as being a source of unusual prompts. I've written a prompt and posted to my journal before and I enjoy seeing the prompts and reading some of the fills.
A recent prompt was "The gods of the English language have become enraged with peoples misuse of the word 'literal' and decide to make all uses of the word become literal."
My favourite response to the prompt is this one by kittythekillerkid, in which someone cleverly uses this to their advantage.
I mention it because I covered something very similar in my metafiction verse in the ficlet Literally vs Metaphorically where the self-aware characters meet an aspect of their Creator (author) who takes a dim view of people claiming to be, for example, "literally on fire".
It's a double-edged thing to see someone suggest/write/make a tv episode that deals with something you've tackled. Because one, how the hell are you supposed to be original and get noticed? But two, hey, it shows you're onto something that other people want to explore. And what's truly original anyway?
In this case it was a definite "I did something similar, yay me" moment. Which was much needed.
