A Poetic Miscellany

Five poems for a writerverse challenge.
Warnings: one poem involves an implied threat of sexual assault and character death (see notes)
Notes: This was a difficult challenge for me; most of the prompts did not inspire me, and writing five different styles for the bonus points made it even harder. I'm not thrilled with these, but I've put them in order from least favourite to those I'm happier with, so hopefully they get better as they go on. The "Winter's Kiss" poem does involve a mild threat of sexual assault but in a non-explicit way often found in folk songs - and ultimately it is only a threat, for this is no ordinary woman.
Title: The sound of drumming
Prompt: The sound of
type: monorhyme
Warnings: None
Can you hear the sound of drumming
Listen to the rhythmic thrumming
Within your soul a constant humming
Does it signal something coming
Is the steadiness just numbing
Does it urge you to succumbing
Is there meaning in the strumming
Wonder at what you're becoming.
Title: A True Delight
Prompt: How to know if you're in love
type: Triolet
Warnings: None
Your heartbeat quickens at the sight
Or just the thought of her
When you're in love this is your plight
Your heartbeat quickens at the sight
She has become a true delight
Your thoughts are just a blur
Your heartbeat quickens at the sight
Or just the thought of her
Title: Navigation
Prompt: Walking with your eyes closed
type: Tanka
Warnings: None
Keeping your balance
Finding your way in the world
Can be difficult
Like sailing without an oar
Or walking with your eyes closed
Title: Winter's Kiss
Prompt: Winter
type: Terza Rima
Warnings: implied threat of sexual assault, character death
Snow was falling on the ground
Soft and white and cold
Winter's chill was all around
Through the woods he strolled
He came upon a pale dame
Quite a beauty to behold
"Tell me love, what is thy name?"
"I'm Nieve," she did reply
"Nieve, you are in my domain,
With you I will lie."
Her eyes flashed an ice blue;
"Well, you can but try."
His corpse was found and this is true
Frozen solid, through and through
Title: Tide
Prompt: Ocean
type: Haiku
Warnings: None
Timeless, eternal
Yet inconstant, ever changing
Endless tidal flow
Warnings: one poem involves an implied threat of sexual assault and character death (see notes)

It must've been hard doing all the different rhyme schemes. I'd have trouble enough with poetry without making sure it matched all the different sets of rules!
Nice job :D

Date: 2012-10-13 04:39 pm (UTC)It was hard to pick what types to write. I wasn't even going to touch a sestina when I had five poems to do - too complicated! - and even so, the terza rima nearly had me pulling my hair out.
I managed to find a rhythm of 5-7-5-7 with 8-8 for the couplet (if "Nieve" is one syllable!) but still. I feel it could have been better but I was struggling with the overall scheme. Maybe one day I'll rewrite Winter's Kiss in another poetic form and give it the attention it deserves!
