Title: No Time For Games
Fandom: Original
'Verse/Series: Aura
Pairing/Characters: Carter, Robin
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 416
Prompt: For the
writerverse challenge Zoom In/Zoom Out
Summary: Carter goes to fetch Robin and take him to an event, but Robin may have other ideas.
Notes: Given the title of the challenge this is the first draft and subsequent iterations may be longer/shorter/different POV or something else entirely.
Warnings: None
Carter knocked on the apartment door. He glanced at his watch. "Robin, if you want a ride, hurry up. And if you don't, then I'm leaving, and you can call a cab and explain to Aura why you're late."
At that, the door opened. Robin was wearing a soft grey sweater and tight black jeans. He ran an appraising eye over Carter's outfit.
"Don't you look lovely," Robin said softly. With the swiftness of a cobra, Robin reached out and grabbed Carter's chin. For a moment Carter was forced to look into Robin's eyes. That Robin was shorter than he was, and so very young in appearance, were no comfort in the face of his piercing stare. This, Carter thought, was what it must be like for a deer to be cornered by a tiger.
However Carter wasn't easily intimidated – he wouldn't have been much of a cop otherwise – and was mostly immune to the Allure. Rather than crumble under Robin's predatory gaze, Carter stepped forward, forcing Robin to move back or release him. Robin did both, and he gave Carter a wide smile of approval. As if he wanted their approval anyway! Arrogant goddamn supernaturals.
"We haven't got time for games," Carter snapped, stepping back into the hallway and gesturing.
"I'm coming," Robin said as if nothing had happened. He grabbed his keys from the sideboard. "As the showgirl said to the bishop. Is that a sexist joke now? I suppose so. Though it's all innuendo and probably more…what is it? Racism but for religion?"
Carter watched Robin close and lock the front door. "Blasphemy?"
"Yes. Though blasphemy's a rather silly idea when you think about it. Who decides which religion is so special you can't even joke about it? Why isn't it blasphemy to insult Isis?" Robin headed for the elevator, Carter alongside him. When Carter had no opinion on the subject, Robin went on, "The only difference is in the number of believers a religion has, and that can change so very fast. Not so long ago many worshipped Her. I could tell you stories –"
"We don’t have time," Carter repeated. He already spent hours listening to Aura and Nikolai's various half-truths and twisted recollections of bygone times. Robin didn't pay him any mind though, and chattered on about a Roman temple he'd once visited all the way to the car.
At least while he was talking Robin wasn't trying to eat him, Carter thought grimly. Or drink him. Or – anything else.

Date: 2012-10-11 05:39 pm (UTC)I have opinions about blasphemy; namely that if you think something is a slur on your religion, that's your problem to deal with, not a legal issue. Because it really only does apply to the most visible and vocal religions. Also I think Isis wouldn't care much what people said about Her because She's a goddess and they're not so whatever :)
I love your enthusiasm! I sometimes wonder where I'm going with this, writing it in such a non-linear fashion, but so long as there are aspects that are working, it's worth keeping on with it :)

Date: 2012-10-12 07:49 am (UTC)Is Robin the mastermind behind everything? Was his temporary death some kind of a trick to a - yet unknown - end? Am I overthinking things again?
Whatever it is, I'm dying to see where it goes! :D

Date: 2014-08-04 10:24 am (UTC)To be honest I never intended Robin to insert himself so much into the story, nor to develop a crush on Carter, but sometimes characters have Ideas.
