Title: Loss
Fandom: Original
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 202
Prompt: For the [livejournal.com profile] writerverse prompts 'taken" and 'comforting'
Summary: It's hard to lose a beloved pet
Warnings/Content Notes: No standard warnings apply. However this is a bleak, sad, and angry poem.

It's hard when your beloved pet is gone
Taken from you
Even when they were old
Or sick
Or both
Even though you know they are no longer suffering
Even if you believe they too have souls
If you can trust in the comforting thought
That they've crossed the Rainbow Bridge
And patiently await reunion with you
It's hard when the house is so empty
When there's no bright eyed companion
To cheer you up
For animals don't judge you
They don't care what you look like
They give affection freely
They need you to care for them
It's hard not to have that
To have someone who truly cares
Who really needs you
Who's not too busy to be with you
Who won't leave you just because
They've found someone else, or
Something better to do with their time
It's hard to accept that a pet's lifespan
Will almost certainly be less than yours
(Parrots are another matter
Sometimes I think I should have a parrot)
That you'll have to say goodbye someday
No matter how far away that day seems
When they're tiny and vulnerable
But even knowing it
It's impossible
Or it should be
Not to get attached anyway

"So, dear friend, I’m asking you to let me know, through that link that we’ve always shared, that when that moment comes, that moment when you’ve had enough, when you're just too tired, you’ll let me know.

That you will somehow find a way to tell me – I’m ready now. It’s time to let go.

And as much as it breaks my heart, I will.

I won't break my promise."

The joy of loving a pet, even for those all too brief years, is worth the inevitable pain of loss.

I know I haven't been reading and commenting over the past weeks, but this struck so close to the bone I couldn't put it off for later reading.

Oh, this is so sad, and told just beautifully.

(Parrots live longer than other animals? I didn't know that.)
