Honor was lounging in the shade of a makeshift tent. It was a pleasant day and he'd brought a book outside to peruse. Tired of facts and figures, he'd chosen a volume of folktales, and refused to feel guilty about taking some leisure time.
The heavy cotton sheet providing his shelter was strung up between the trees at the edge of the courtyard and there were several large cushions strewn on the ground. Honor had settled himself comfortably on two of them, one at his hip, another under his elbow, and lost himself to the stories on the yellowed pages.
"Ow! Honor!"
Honor sighed and put one finger between the pages, closing the leather-bound book around it. He looked over to where Cal and Tara had been drilling with wooden swords. Tara stood with her arms crossed, her weapon loosely held in one hand. Cal had his sword hand raised to his mouth, sucking at his knuckles.
Seeing he had Honor's attention, Cal made his protest. "She's trying to kill me."
"With a wooden sword?" Honor shifted his position, still clutching his book. "She's training you. Do you imagine enemy combatants will go easy on you? You'll have more to worry about than bruised knuckles if you have to fight on the Tour."
Cal considered this and then lowered his gaze. Without another word, he turned back to Tara and took up a fighting stance again. Honor smiled.
"Tara," he called, before the combat could begin again. "Cal is a diplomat, not a soldier. You can't expect him to be an expert warrior any more than he would expect you to be fluent in six languages."
Chastened, Tara gave a bow of acknowledgement. Then she lifted her own sword and the battle began again. Honor watched for a moment. Tara called over a guard so she could demonstrate techniques. She made a move in slow motion and then instructed Cal to try it, giving him more encouragement and praise.
Satisfied, Honor returned to his reading.
