Summary: Aurelia tells her version of Carter's backstory.
Warnings: None
Once upon a time there was a cop. Let's call him Colton. He was pretty good at his job and for the most part he enjoyed it. He was good at dealing with people, and he liked the feeling of making a difference.
In time he made detective and served with the drug unit and, later, became a homicide detective. Maybe sergeant would be next, or maybe not. He'd achieved enough to be proud of, and he was content.
So might the story have ended, except for an unforeseeable incident. He was asked to head up a task force to bring down a particular drug cartel. He acknowledged he was an odd choice but his previous partner, already a sergeant, had recommended him, and Colton wasn't going to turn down a prestigious assignment like this.
Except he wasn't being given a chance to show his skills and move further up the ranks. He'd been selected as a patsy, a fall guy, someone to blame for the chaos that followed. It was, he'd discover later, an act of revenge for him to be chosen. The why's don't really matter though.
Colton was arrested, charged with various drug offences, homicide, RICO. He protested his innocence and he got the best lawyer he could afford but to no avail. Humiliated, shunned, his career in ruins, the final blow came when he was found guilty.
Six weeks into his incarceration, despite his segregation from the general population – one final benefit of having been an officer of the law – Colton was attacked by another inmate. The conspirators cleaning up? Maybe. Except they failed.
Despite everything, Colton wasn't about to go down without a fight. Though badly wounded, he fought back and killed his attacker.
Two days later his attorney told him that the case against him was falling apart. Someone involved in the conspiracy had been arrested for first degree murder and had spilled details about a number of crimes in order to try and gain immunity. Colton was innocent as he had always claimed.
It didn't take long for the evidence to be collected and more arrests to be made, and, finally, Colton to be released. There were apologies and there was an out of court settlement that ensured he'd be financially well off for some time to come. He made one statement, via his lawyer, to the press, and then took off.
The quiet surroundings of the log cabin he rented were both a blessing and a curse. He wanted the solitude in order to gather his thoughts, to grieve and heal and move on. But soon enough he grew tired of being alone.
He wanted his life back, but when he asked about returning to work there were…concerns. It was suggested that he wasn't ready, physically or mentally, to carry the badge and gun.
Knowing how it would look if Colton did go to the media – who, with their usual fickleness had gone from 'Good Cop Gone Bad' to 'Heroic Cop Acquitted', and would kill for an interview ('Heartless Superiors Deny Cop His Badge') – his superiors gave him a new position with a fancy title. Some sort of liaison, talking with people about their concerns regarding crime and policing. Desk work, mostly. No gun. Goddamned ceremonial, he thought. At all the best events but without the money or class of the other guests, always an outsider. Yet in rubbing shoulders with the rich and powerful, he would be making his voice – and the voices of the citizens – heard.
It was better than nothing, he supposed.
There too, the story might have ended. Except, in his new role, Colton attended an exhibition opening at one of the city's museums. What might have been a rather dull evening turned into a bloodbath when a small group of armed men took the guests hostage.
Had he never been arrested, he would never have been there and that would have a pity because, you see, that's where the story really begins. When things changed for the better.
That's when he met us.
