"Another body?"
"With another note." He passed her the photocopied letter - the original was in evidence, and a battery of forensic tests would be run on it for DNA, fingerprints, the chemical composition of the navy ink and the heavy cream paper. No doubt some sort of psychologist would study it too, looking at the choice of words and possible symbolism, and the style of the handwriting, and the sketch of a carnation in bloom at the bottom right of the sheet.
Aura looked over it, eyes narrowing. He watched as she read it again, chewing on her bottom lip as she considered every possible angle.
"The flower is the same; the killer's signature?"
"Likely. And the same tag line."
"Roses are red; all three notes start this way, yet the killer draws a carnation." She tipped her head. "'Roses are red, violets are dead; this one I murdered with a shot to his head. Life is for the living.' Charming."
"Not going to end up in a Hallmark card," he agreed.
"He or she is admitting to murder; no trying to justify it," Aura mused. "I'm not sure what that means."
He took back the paper. "Nor do I. But I'm going to find out. So, one of yours?"
She smiled in a way that made his blood run cold. "I have no idea. But you should pray it isn't. A serial killer is bothersome enough. One of us displaying such a disturbed personality...that would be bad. Very bad indeed."

"Not going to end up in a Hallmark card," he agreed. Ooh, ouch - I like how cool they both are about this.
Also, a vampire serial killer? Now that is disturbing...

Date: 2011-07-01 10:10 am (UTC)I had an idea years back for a fic where the vampire community became increasingly concerned that they were being targeted as the victims came ever closer to home. So the killer is either someone who is, or knows all about, the vampires. It was fun to toy with the idea again :D

Date: 2011-07-27 09:15 am (UTC)I wonder who it might be? The killer I mean. A random crazy guy, or a member of some ancient Order which existed for centuries and is killing off vampires because they are an abomination and an insult to the God and stuff like that... or maybe someone close. Very close. ;D
Me likey :D
P.S. I'm sorry I'm so late. And LJ keeps on crashing which isn't helping to keep up at all. D:

Date: 2011-07-27 12:22 pm (UTC)Yes, LJ frustrates the hell out of me, too! Also I'm out of town RN and my Internet connection is so slow it makes me remember the good old dial-up times with fondness.
It's one of those days when everything seems to be against you I guess.
Hope LJ will recover soon. :D

Date: 2011-07-25 12:09 am (UTC)I love police/legal procedurals, so this had me hooked. A vampire serial killer?
Is Aura a detective/investigator, too? I was a little confused about that, but assumed that it was supposed to be open-ended as to her role.

Date: 2011-07-26 07:21 am (UTC)Aura is a vampire, the detective is human but turning to her for help with an unusual case. However, post "Blood Ties" [based on the Blood books by Tania Huff; ex-cop private detective and her cop ex-partner work with a vampire to solve paranormal cases] and to some extent "Moonlight" [vampire protects reporter who turns DA investigator at the series close], I worry it might be too cliché.
