Title: Turning the Tables
Fandom: original story
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 459
Prompt: For the
100_tales prompt #012 Sunset.
Summary: . Hostages weren't supposed to be calm, weren't supposed to take your weapons, and certainly weren't supposed to rise from the dead.
Notes: All original fic, unless otherwise stated, is intended be readable as a one-shot, though is also a scene/taster piece from a potential novel
Aura wasn't afraid, and that seemed to bother the gunman. He'd been waving his weapon at those making noises of terror, but when he'd met her steady gaze, though he scowled, he took a step back – perhaps sensing the danger behind her blue-eyed innocence.
"What's your deal?" he demanded.
"Apart from the fact that you interrupted my evening at this rather nice museum fundraiser, made me sit on the floor in this rather expensive dress, and then shot my husband?" she asked archly. "No deal at all."
His gaze flickered to the prone form, black suit lying in a pool of red blood. "You don't seem too upset," he said. "He got a really good life insurance policy or something?"
"Something like that, yes."
"Stop talking to the hostages," yelled one of the other gunmen, the ringleader, or at least the one giving orders right now. For all Aura knew the mastermind behind the heist was watching the whole thing from a van or safehouse via the security feeds – she'd been involved in a job not too long ago where the man planning the robbery had done just that.
Aura moistened her lips, and gazed up once more at the large windows in the wall opposite her. Shadows were lengthening as the sun dipped further behind the skyscrapers. Not long now.
"You said you could get this thing open," the ringleader complained, shoving one of the masked men, the only one who was unarmed.
"I can! Just give me a minute!" He sounded young and almost as terrified as the hostages. Aura closed her eyes, feeling the familiar sensation of eventide surround her.
The sun hit the horizon.
Aura got to her feet gracefully, and walked towards the gunmen. On the floor, the corpse's hand twitched.
"Excuse me," Aura called brightly. The leader of the gunmen pointed his weapon at her, a snarl on his lips which faded as his face paled.
"What the –"
"I told you you'd regret this," Aura said softly, and moved with supernatural speed to wrest the weapon from his gasp, then turned to look over her shoulder. "They just don't listen, do they, darling?"
"They never do," he said with a sigh. "Now which one of you was it shot me?"
Hostages weren't supposed to be calm, weren't supposed to take your weapons, and certainly weren't supposed to rise from the dead. Unfortunately for these men, they'd chosen the wrong fundraiser to hijack, a mistake probably not all of them would live to regret. Aura licked one fang.
"Now, this is how it's going to go," she said, echoing the words the ringleader had spoken to the hostages. "Shut up and do as you're told and most of you will get to live…"

Date: 2011-01-06 10:38 pm (UTC)Even though it's very different, the way it ended reminded me of the "Angel" episode where Drusilla and Darla trap the guests in the wine-cellar, and Angel just closes the door behind him and leaves. It's just the mood of the piece - very chilling and ironic.

Date: 2011-07-27 10:07 am (UTC)And somehow it seems to me that this story happened years before "Violets" and "Chopin". IDKW. O_o
Did it? o_O

Date: 2011-07-27 10:21 am (UTC)Or it might happen near the start of the novel - might be how the detective finds out about them. Or maybe after this, I thought they'd have to move on to a new city, and then meet up with the other characters. There are a few options :D

Date: 2011-07-27 12:11 pm (UTC)Oooh, that's a great idea! :D
He might be one of the hostages, undercover, because he'd been working on that gang's case and knew there might be a raid. o_O
Then it could also happen some time before Violets - there he and Aura already trust each other and they would have needed this time to become so familiar...
Oh, I hope I'm not getting out of line here (you know sometimes I do that).
I'm sorry if I am. I didn't mean to.

Date: 2011-10-04 04:23 pm (UTC)And I'm really curious about how Aura and Nikki will handle the situation. I mean how many people have just seen them in their vampire form? What will they do about it? What do they usually do in those cases? How come they will let Carter walk away with this knowledge? Or they won't and he'll leave before they can alter/erase his memories or whatever they do? Can they do that btw?
Please, please, please, I so want to read this!! Awwwww!!! ^_^

Date: 2011-10-04 04:31 pm (UTC)However we've already seen that vampire allure doesn't work that well on Carter. So it won't take, and later he'll remember what really happened and not the story that he was told. And then he'll go looking for them :D

Individual strengths/weaknesses, yes, it's an important part.
And what about the vampire strengths and weaknesses in general? Things like sunlight, silver, fire, stakes, flying, having/not having a reflection? To which point things affect them? What are their limits? I know your mythology is diverse from Moonlight's. Have you thought it through already? :D
OMG, me and my endless questions again. Am I bothering you?.. O_O

Date: 2011-10-04 06:31 pm (UTC)I did one fic about a wolf family and one fic about an ancient mythological House; I'm thinking the modern day wolf family tell the cubs the mythological story of their ancestors - even if it's not true, it's part of their heritage. Which makes me think the 'vampires' have their own favourite stories...Need to stop chattering and start writing :D
