Snowflake Challenge Day 12

Day 12 - In your own space, create your own challenge.

Echoing what some others have said, and what day 7 was about: try something new!
If you've never participated in a bingo or icon challenge or exchange then give it a go! If you've never listened to a podcast or watched a fanvid then why not try at least one or two?
If you want to try a new fandom or pairing, go for it! If you never write gen, challenge yourself! If you don't usually leave comments then try doing so for the next five (or ten) fanworks you enjoy and start building the habit. Comment to someone you haven't interacted with before :)

Where are all the challenges now? I still have no idea on god's green earth how to participate in yuletide. I just am not understanding how folks find these things and sign up. I miss the fandom days of olde on LJ.

I've made some posts about finding stuff on DW recently because I'm trying to encourage more people here rather than tumblr. This post: https://meridian-rose.dreamwidth.org/642194.html for one, the communities mentioned here promote other communities and events/challenges so if you follow those you'll find more things :)
(You can also use interests and site search, much like LJ!)
That's how I find things mostly, though obviously via friends recommending things, eg when you post a bingo card or mention you're signing up for an event and provide a link, the way you do when posting fic for therealljidol.

The snowflake_challenge day 5: https://snowflake-challenge.dreamwidth.org/40488.html was to promote communities and sites so lots of people have rec'd things there.
I've made new friends by participating in snowflake and it's always open even after the last day on the 15th, if you want to go back through the entries and find new people to talk to.


Yuletide: follow the community so you see the announcements.
Nominations begin September. The actual nominations happen on AO3 and there's a tutorial. Fandoms have to be small, usually 1k or fewer fics on AO3. This is where you say what fandoms you want to request and/or write. It's a very easy process if you've used AO3 before :)
Then you sign up, again on AO3, and there's a tutorial (written ones and usually a video one too). It's nice to write a letter about what you requested so the person assigned to you can get more detail than just the fandom and character(s) you've requested.
You get emailed your assignment which will match on a fandom you offered, and you write a fic, upload it AO3 ticking the "fulfils an assignment" box and you're done :)

Ooooh! Thanks, L! I admire your drive and tenacity and I think this IS something we need to begin aggressively pursuing. I wonder....should we start up fandom comms??? Like 15-minute fandom challenges? Drabble communities? Fandoms in particular?

I'm seriously thinking of setting up some fandom comms for ones that don't have them - but I also don't want to get too niche, plus I don't want to overreach myself nor leave them sitting with no content, so at the moment I'm still thinking!
15 minute fandom? That sounds intriguing!

Also I realise I found those specific wordcount at the writersherald https://thewritersherald.dreamwidth.org which is another community worth following and using for promotion :)
