Picspam; Legend of the Seeker

This picspam was created for a challenge at [livejournal.com profile] legendland.
Come and join us; we have Confessors, Seekers and more Mord'Sith than you can shake a stick at.

I chose to focus on my two favourite characters: Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander and Darken Rahl. Please note (1) all information pertains to the television show "Legend of the Seeker" and not the books upon which the series is based and (2) picspam contains spoilers for season one episodes 1.1-1.19.

Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander

There have only been three wizards of the First Order born in the last 70 years. One is dead, one works for Rahl, and the other is Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander – or Zedd, to his friends.

Introduction
We first meet Zedd when Kahlan approaches him, looking for the Seeker. That he's cunningly disguised as a crazy old man who talks to his chickens, a disguise assisted by his habit of moonbathing in the nude, is the reason he's never been suspected to be a wizard. Kahlan, however, knows a wizard when she sees so much of one. In fact, she's more easily accepting of the fact that Zedd is a wizard than she is that Richard is the Seeker. Even Richard isn't convinced at first. It's obvious he needs the help of Kahlan and Zedd to fulfil his destiny and the three companions set off for the Midlands.

Magic

Zedd's magical powers are very strong. He can use them to heal, fight, disappear, and conceal, amongst other things. However the Mord'Sith use a weapon called the Agiel which turns magic back against the user; Zedd is powerless against them. His only recourse is to use magic to disappear. He was also Confessed by the Mother Confessor Serena – wizards are not immune to the power of the Confessor. Despite his assertion that "without my magic, I'm just an old man in a robe", Zedd's wisdom and experience make him valuable even without his magical abilities.

Ruben Rybnik

Possibly Zedd's finest moment came when he went undercover as the Grand Puppeteer, Ruben Rybnik, at the obnoxious Princess Violet of Tamarang's birthday party. Zedd switched the box of Orden that Violet's mother, Queen Milena, held and gave it to a servant girl, Rachel, to smuggle from the castle. Darken Rahl was at the party to take possession of the box and as a distraction Zedd put on a puppet show that amused Rahl, until the discovery that the box was missing. Furious, Rahl decapitated Zedd…only to find that the "wizard" was merely a puppet.

Family

Zedd has a brother, Thaddicus, who he visited to retrieve a magical key. Thaddicus was angry that Zedd had been away so many years without any word. Furthermore, Zedd and Thaddicus's mother died during that time. Eventually Zedd put aside his grief and Thaddicus his anger and the brothers parted on good terms.
Zedd entrusted Kahlan with a secret regarding a child he may have fathered. Later, when the company found Jensen, Richard's half-sister, the secret was revealed to Richard; Zedd is his grandfather. It was a bittersweet moment for the two men as they were reunited with Terralyn, Richard's mother and Zedd's daughter, only briefly before her death at the hands of the Mord'Sith Denna. Richard took some comfort though in the knowledge he has a half-sister, and that his friend Zedd is actually his grandfather.

Darken Rahl

Lord Darken Rahl is the tyrannical ruler of D'Hara and now seeks dominion over the Midlands, something he hopes to attain by uniting the three magical Boxes of Orden. The boxes are said to give ultimate power to whoever possesses them.

Introduction

Rahl sent troops to kill every child in the village of Brennidon to avert the prophecy that one of them would grow up to be the next Seeker – the one who would defeat Rahl. Unbeknownst to Rahl, Zedd smuggled the newly born Richard out past the Barrier (the magical wall separating the Midlands from the Westland) where Rahl would never find him. While Richard grew up, unaware of his destiny, Rahl strengthened his power base, having Confessors killed and searching for the Book of Counted Shadows.
Despite his often evil endeavours he claims to have his people's best interests at heart; there is even a devotion that is made to Rahl by those loyal to him (or those professing loyalty so they can stay alive).

Magic

Rahl is not considered to be a wizard but he does have access to magical powers, such as his ability to know that the box of Orden that Queen Milena showed him was a fake. He can also teleport, using the right symbols and incantations. He employs wizards to do his bidding; Giller cast the Spell of the Lying Moon to put Richard into a trance so Rahl could trick Richard into giving him the location of one of the boxes of Orden.
Rahl communicates with his troops via a "journey book" in which whatever he writes in his book appears by magical means in the other book. To work, the journey book's entries must be written in blood.

Associates

Rah's most feared and loyal bodyguards and interrogators are the Mord'Sith. They will torture a man until he becomes their slave and tells them whatever they want to know. Giller, the only other remaining First Order Wizard, provided many services to Rahl until he was killed by Kahlan after his experiments designed to tap into the power of the Confessors sent her into a Con Dar (Blood Rage).
Rahl commands a large number of loyal troops. Fane led the Quad that was hunting for the Book of Counted Shadows but was killed trying to defeat Kahlan and the newly-discovered Seeker, Richard. General Demain Nass was Rahl's right hand man until he was slain by Zedd.

Temperament

Darken Rahl is convinced of his right to rule the known lands. He can be patient when it suits him, such as agreeing to go and fetch a box of Orden from Queen Milena himself, knowing the diplomacy was a shortcut to getting what he wanted. Generally speaking, however, he has a fierce temper and zero tolerance for incompetence of any sort.
For allowing Richard to escape her clutches, Rahl had Denna tortured before giving her one more chance, perhaps reluctant to waste the years of training that had made her a formidable Mord'Sith prior to her meeting with the Seeker. However the usual fate of any who displease him is death. Queen Milena never saw the knife in his hand until too late; others briefly feel his wrath.
