Nikolina stood at the treeline, watching her beloved go about his daily chores. Cecilio whistled as he drew water from the well and began to wash the family's clothes. As the youngest son, the traditionally feminine duties fell on him while his father and brothers were out chopping wood. They thought him weak, and needed someone to cook and clean – and there too many dead wives between the older men for any village woman to feel safe with them now. So Cecilio did the chores without complaint.

"Good morning," Nikolina purred, stepping into view when she'd had enough of playing voyeur. Cecilio started, reaching for his dagger. He gave her a wide smile.

"Nikolina!" He glanced around for his family but they were still out in the woods. Nikolina knew this for certain but she did not say so. Cecilio was still innocent to most of her abilities. She wanted to keep it that way for a while.

They embraced and Nikolina kissed him, hungry for more, feeling his arousal grow the more they kissed, hearing his heart pounding with rich, warm, blood. With an effort, Nikolina stepped back, blinking hard, hoping she hadn't shown her vampiric form. It happened sometimes, when the moon was almost full. She was getting older, more powerful. She still couldn't heal in daylight, but her mental powers were becoming stronger every year and she'd once managed to talk down an entire mob from hanging a woman they believed to be a witch.

"We must be careful," Nikolina said reluctantly.

"No. We must be bold," Cecilio said. "I love you."

Nikolina actually swayed on the spot. To her surprise she loved him too. "No," she whispered. "You do not yet know what I am."

"I will love you always, no matter what," Cecilio swore. "Marry me."

She shook her head. "And keep house for your father and brothers? I think not."

"Then we'll run away. You have money. You can leave at any time. I can't, Nikolina, but if you married me…" He trailed off. "You won't marry me because I'm poor." He turned away, and she reached for him, strong fingers digging into his shoulder until he winced.

"I will not marry you until you know the truth." She sighed, releasing him. He was probably bruised and she was sorry for that. "I will come back at midnight. Meet me at the large oak by the crossroads. I will tell you everything. And then, if you do not turn from me in horror, we can plan to leave. Together."

He grabbed her face in both hands and kissed her, over and over. "I will be there," he promised. "And we will be together. Forever."

Forever.

The poor boy had no idea.

"It's not fair," Catalin complained, pacing up and down the stone steps at the side of the castle. "I have just as much right as a woman to be High Queen."

"High King," Honora, perched atop the stone pillar at the base of the steps, corrected mildly.

Catalin waved his hand dismissively. "Just because I can't prove my offspring are mine and part of the bloodline! It's ridiculous. I wish I'd been born female, then there'd be no question of my taking the throne of the Commonwealth."

Kalinda was sat on the lowest step, leaning back on her elbows which rested a few steps behind. She looked up at him. "You'd hate to be a woman. Bleeding once a month? Being pregnant? Giving birth publicly to prove the offspring are truly yours?"

Catalin stared at her, imaging these horrors. "I just want my birthright," he said at last. "To be High King."

Honora smoothed out her skirts. "They'll give in," she offered. "Eventually. You'll make a good High King."

"With Honora at your side," Kalinda added.

"Always," Catalin said without hesitation. He squinted up at the sky, judging the time from the sun's position. "I'm going to go riding before lunch."

The two women watched him go.

"If you married him, you'd be High Queen," Kalinda commented.

Honora shuddered. "And give birth in public? Never. Not that he's enthusiastic about children at all. Besides, I would not usurp his birth right and make him a figurehead king subordinate to me. He is the High Queen's only child and he is next in line to the throne. It is unthinkable that he should not be recognised as such on account of his gender."

"No matter how much you love him?"

Honora shook her head. "Because I love him."
