Prompt: For the [livejournal.com profile] writerverse story starters (amnesty) challenge. I chose the story starter Every morning a crow comes and sits at my window.
Summary: He is my black winged familiar.
Content Notes: No standard warnings apply.

Every morning a crow comes and sits at my window. I bring him a choice morsel to eat; a small piece of bread, a thumb sized scrap of cake, a sliver of meat. He gobbles whatever I give him, glossy head bobbing up and down as his strong beak works at devouring the treat.

"What is the news from the forest?" I ask. He tells me, and while his caw is merely a corvid's call, I am able to hear the meaning beyond it, to see what he has seen and know what he knows.

Cats are more traditional familiars, but crows have wings and can travel great distances. He nods, and flies away. He will be back tomorrow.

At first I thought the viewpoint character here was imprisoned, but now I'm uncertain. I like the focus on the relationship between person and familiar, and also the excellent point about birds being good for gathering information / going long distances :)
