Cara hated letting Richard drive. However her red sports car had met an unfortunate accident – well, not really an accident since she'd rammed the elder Rahl brother off the road. So now she had to sit in the backseat.

Kahlan was sitting in the front seat, looking out for road signs. Richard drummed his fingers on the steering wheel as he drove, rock music accompanying their travels. On the dashboard was a cheap compass he'd picked up at the last gas station, some kind of novelty item that glowed blue when you were heading north. Cara thought she could make a better compass out of a cork and a pin.

They were heading out to meet Zedd, who'd hitchhiked his way out to the Palace hotel and was no doubt stuffing himself with their famed buffet.

Sometimes Cara wondered why she'd left her employer behind to side with his half-brother. She blamed the puppy dog eyes.

Kahlan turned in her seat. "You okay, Cara?"

"I'm great," she drawled. "But if we don't hurry, Zedd will max out his credit card again."

"He'll be fine," Richard said. "He sent me a message saying he was poolside with a girl named Sally. Or Linda. I think he was paying attention to other things than her name."

Cara rolled her eyes. Zedd was a man with appetites.

She really hated road trips.
