Summary: Kat and Honor watch Cal flirting and discuss the truth about seduction

"So you're the baronet of Glass Haven?" the young woman asked.
"Yes. But it's Glashaven," Cal corrected gently. "Not glass like in palatial windows. Glas in the Old Tongue, meaning a sort of blue-green colour, like the ocean." He reached over and stroked her cheek. "Like your eyes."
The young woman giggled and lowered her eyes in false shyness.
Nearby, at another table, Kat and Honor watched. Honor shook his head. "That stuff doesn't work on you, right, Kat?"
Kat took a sip of her drink. "Not usually. Of course it helps when I want it to work."
"So you think that she wants Cal to seduce her?"
"Yes. Otherwise no amount of drinks or titles or flowery compliments would work on her. You can't create attraction, only hope it's already there and win someone over."
Honor signalled the barmaid for another drink. "But sometimes attraction develops over time."
"Yes, of course. But by that point you probably don't bother talking about ocean-coloured eyes," Kat said.
"I've always thought your eyes are more like the sky after a rainstorm," Honor said. "A vivid azure."
Kat laughed and slapped at his arm. "Charmer," she said. "It's no use trying to seduce me. I know you too well."
He shrugged his shoulders in an 'I tried' gesture. Kat smiled and leant over to briefly brush her lips against his cheek.

I have to wonder if Honor is secretly a little disappointed by Kat's response, though, under that shrug and joking attitude.
I do like Kat and Honor's observations about seduction. Although I've known people who were at first put off by someone and not attracted, but the attraction grew later - often because of the other person's sense of humor.
If you can make someone laugh, you can become pretty attractive over time, I think. Especially for a woman, I think. They are't so obsessed with physical appearance as a whole (generalization, I know)

He's maybe a little disappointed but it's true that they've known each too long for flirting to really work. It isn't lack of attraction that's the issue so much as the baggage acknowledging it fully would bring, in particular Kat's reluctance to enter into any long term relationship.
I hope it also ties in with Cal's initial assertion that Ryan 'isn't his type' which ultimately proves false. I'm a firm believer in relationships being built on a firmer foundation than initial lust/chemistry.
I once saw a tv documentary once on gender and social behaviour. They took groups of men and women to a bar and tracked eye movements and other cues and asked them questions about the people they encountered.
The women were, on the whole, scanning the entire body and making value judgements and constructing narratives based on appearance and behaviour. The men focused on the breasts, face, breasts, other, breasts. They also didn't really consider personality as early.
Also one gender kept scanning for 'a better catch' while the other remained fixated on the 'one in hand', although shamefully I can't remember which way around it was. So while there are no absolutes in gender and gendered behaviour we can make broad stroke assumptions that will prove right more often than not.
Long comment is long but I do find these things fascinating.
