Fic, Yuletide, Legend of the Seeker, and Merlin

Twenty prompts of original fic done, just ten to go for that meme :D

I'm counting those three hundred words towards my fic total; they're not from my novel but they are original fic and pirate guidelines apply :D

I signed up for Yuletide after agonising over what to ask for, and what to offer. I wrote a really detailed 'Dear Yuletide Writer' letter too, because I am increasingly aware of how crappy it is to get matched to someone in an exchange and have no clue as to what will make them happy. The signups are open for a while, so I won't get my recipient info for a few days, but I went through some of the letters and found two people I might want to write 'treats' for. Treats don't have to meet the one thousand words minimum; you just see someone's prompt and think it would be fun, so you write them a little extra gift :D

Legend of the Seeker wasn't listed this year for Yuletide. It's still eligible at Small Fandoms Fest so I don't think size is the issue, just that no-one nominated it. I'd taken for granted that someone would. Maybe there's enough fic still being produced for it and so people were nominating even rarer fandoms?

Which brings me to a question for the LotS peeps: do you think our fandom is dying? There hardly seems to be any interaction at the discussion posts on People's Palace anymore and there are only a few of us writing regularly in the fandom. New viewers are still being acquired though, so I thought maybe we could pimp the show.

This post
gives details on pimping your fandom at Small Fandoms Fest. You can see the sort of pimping posts that have already been featured. An overview of the show/movie, the characters, a few pics, and a list of comms and websites of interest. It might be useful to do this and at least pimp out all the LJ and DW comms in the hope of getting a few more members. I don't feel I'd do the best job of this by myself, but maybe we could maybe work on it as a group and have one person submit it? This round is open until the end of January and then a new round of pimping starts. Good idea? Terrible idea?

Finally, the Merlin Personality test, snagged from [livejournal.com profile] confessoralana; I'm Gwaine :D With the swishy hair. But this is awesome not just because Gwaine is one of the major reasons I still bother with the often misogynistic Merlin, but because it's fairly accurate :D Especially the bit about being too lazy to live up to my potential :P

Freedom is very important to you, you hate to feel trapped by anything.

You are very intelligent but sometimes you can be lazy and not achieve your full potential.

You trust your instincts and you can usually tell within minutes of meeting someone whether they are someone you can trust.

Sometimes people complain that you are too flippant, but that is just because they don't understand that you like to protect yourself by not revealing quite how much you care.

I think the fandom probably is dying down. Without new canon to flail about, it's come down to the die hards. I know I sometimes find myself writing something and thinking "Haven't I written this before? Haven't we said this before?"

I was actually horrified to find that a line I recently wrote in Dragon Blood was almost word for word also in Castle in the Air. >_>

There are still lots of things to write about of course. Lots of ideas to explore. It's just hard to keep people excited about it without new episodes of the show. And it's hard to keep the people that make things interested when there's no one to appreciate their creations.

That being said, I've got about 3 partially complete chapter fics hanging out on my computer that haven't been posted yet. So even if I never start a new one again, there will still be at least 3 more from me after Dragon Blood and Brother's Keeper are done.

Pimping could be a good idea. I'd be on board for whatever.

Sounds good to me. <3

And yeah, I know what you mean. One of my other big fandoms, Inuyasha, has been over for something like 10 years, but it's still one of the biggest anime fandoms and continues to grow.

I guess we should enjoy it while it lasts... And then make it last a little longer... and longer... And then enjoy it some more. :D
Personally I'm not going anywhere. I just need to survive this hellish semester (you know right) and I'll be back again! :D

OMG YAY!!!! :D *FLAILS CRAZY*

lol, glad you're excited.

I'm trying to finish up one of them now, to post for the upcoming Walter discussion on PP. <3

I think you're right that the LotS fandom is dying down. I haven't gotten bored yet, though ;)

I usually don't really get into a fandom until after I've seen everything, possibly because it is so annoying when you have an epic idea that's later contradicted by canon, but I think LotS suffers partly because there's only two seasons. There just isn't as much you can do with that as with, say, seven years of material in HP or BtVS, or ten in Smallville.

I would be open to helping with pimping - I don't think I'm necessarily the best at that, but if we all help it could be a fun project :)

[identity profile] pristineungift.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this exactly. I was about to say the same thing about the amount of material. Yes.

/rambles off somewhere

It gives us a lot of room to make things up, but on the whole I feel it would easier if there were several more seasons - there's a lot of interesting plot from the books, even if it would need to be modified for sanity ;)

[identity profile] pristineungift.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish there was a like button I could use to agree. But. I AGREE.

[identity profile] hrhrionastar.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good point about canon getting worse as you go on; still, there are more opportunities to change things with more material.

I must always be a die-hard fan then ;D

Plus we can all proof-read it so there are no embarrassing errors. I think part of my reluctance, beyond my laziness, to do this is being Voice of Legend of the Seeker and screwing it up so it reflects badly on the fandom as a whole. Good idea - I'd be worried about that, too. Partiality for Darken might make it hard for me to give it that Epic Doomed Love R/K spin, for one thing ;)

[identity profile] pristineungift.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol if I did it, it would be 'Legend of the Seeker, Or: The Darken, Jennsen, and Zedd Show.'

[identity profile] hrhrionastar.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
With important guest stars/love interests Cara, Denna, Kahlan, Nicci...oh, and Richard, the actual Seeker of Truth.' :D

I think the LotS fandom is dwindling which isn't surprising, I guess, since the last new episode aired more than a year ago.

I can really tell the difference at ff.net. Even the R/K and K/C fics don't get nearly the number of comments they once did, and only a few new fics get posted every week.

I have noticed the dwindling participation in discussion at PP, although the discussion posts have always been hit or miss. I guess I've gotten too comfortable with the core of active members at PP and haven't been aggressive about bringing new folks on board.

I'd be up for whatever you sugggest.

[identity profile] dorothydeath.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Like Pris said, without new canon the fandom is pretty much doomed...

But what do we say to the god of Death? :D

I'm not ready to let go just yet! :D

This semester is a nightmare, I have twice as many classes as I would normally have thanks to the new timetables so I'm not as active at PP as I would have wanted to be... But the semester will be over in less than two months and I hope I'll catch up. :D

Uhm... All these pictures of this guy with the hair... No. No, no, no, I don't have time to be watching Merlin rn. No, don't tempt me! :D

[identity profile] dorothydeath.livejournal.com 2011-11-19 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh noes... For some reason I always end up rooting for the bad guys ("support the underdog, truth is not what 'good guys' say it is, it's always somewhere in between" kind of logic... unless bad guys kill puppies for fun or something equally horrible), and what you describe is my absolutely favorite type of villain. A villain with actual reasons.

Oh noes! :D

I think in each fandom they still have their die hards. I don't any of the seasons on DVD and just got cable back but even then it's hard to come across Seeker on tv (at least in WI) so I find myself at a loss when it comes to writing in the seeker fandom and I really have more fun with doing more cracky fics for seeker. I still love the show just I am not as inspired any more to write Seeker fics.

[identity profile] brontefanatic.livejournal.com 2011-11-20 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Both seasons of Seeker are available in streaming video on Netflix for a flat fee of $7.99 a month (in addition to thousands of other television shows and movies), and I think all the episodes are available for free on Hulu.

I have the DVDs, but never watch them since it's so much handier to watch streaming on my computer.

It's definitely dying down, yes, but that's to be expected from a closed-canon show. Very few fandoms get to be a Firefly. There's still plenty of people around reading and writing fic, in my opinion - I don't feel like I'm all alone caring about the show.
