Sleepy Hollow recs for trope bingo

Title: Ichabod vs The Modern World
Fandom: Sleepy Hollow (TV)
Type: 12 recs in various media
Prompt: For the [community profile] trope_bingo prompt 'time travel'"

Sleepy Hollow and its associated fanworks often deal with Ichabod's struggles to understand the modern world – or his delight in it – and Abbie's appreciation for his cultural mores. Here are some recs looking at the "fish out of water" aspect of Sleepy Hollow.

Rule Two by lady_ragnell Summary from fic "Rule two: this is a partner thing, nothing more. Don't go getting any ideas."
A fake relationship fic that is sweet and funny. While a favourite of mine is when Abbie tells Ichabod "“when we go to a restaurant you only get to order food when you already know what it is.” there's a great example of Ichabod falling foul of modern cultural mores. He tells someone he was "sneaking off to make love to Abbie", which for him means courting her. Abbie points out that these days this would mean having sex.

Missed Calls by fiji13
Building upon canon, Ichabod leaves a series of voicemails for Abbie. Ichabod has got the hang of using the phone but what's delightful is that he approaches a voice mail as if it were a heartfelt letter, with lots of detail, and always ending with "respectfully yours".

Small Things, Small Hours by vands88 Summary: It is the small things that Ichabod misses.
Excerpt: "The red light that blinks from my left-hand side is not from the digital alarm clock but is in fact the hue of sunrise, the first of many beginnings in my life with Katrina. And so it has become that these small hours, which the red numbers insist on counting, are my living daydream. These are the only moments I allow myself to contemplate home. The Lieutenant may kindly jest about my incompetence with modern technology but it seems too forthright to share with her the intricate details of my home, about the harvests and the mannerisms and the other menial particulars that can no doubt be gleamed from the pages of textbooks.
It is the small things that I miss."

Beautiful and touching. The first person POV works so well for this fic, showing us all Crane's thoughts and feelings, his sense of loss and the more hopeful moments alike.

Maps by Larathia Summary: For jujitsuelf, who requested something with Ichabod and maps.
On the wonders of GPS and the amazing accuracy of a modern printed map.

Five Senses by Alipeeps Summary: Everything about this era is unutterably alien to him.
Lights that are bright, ceasless noise…this fic looks at how overwhelming modern life can be for Ichabod.

What Survivesby ljs Summary: “If this guy’s an Oxford professor, he’s got to have some publications somewhere,” Luke says. “’Cause he’s kind of young to hold a professorship, my cousin says you have to be, y’know, famous, it’s not like here.”
Thanks to Project Gutenberg Ichabod's scholarly work has been preserved, giving him a moment of joy and a link to his past.

Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades by wanttobeatree Summary: It dawns on Abbie that Ichabod only has one change of clothes, so she takes him shopping.
Ichabod discovers Furbies, sunglasses, and that England has a queen now.

Imagine Ichabod Crane a Tumblr where people suggest situations involving Ichabod discovering a new aspect of modern life. Some of the prompts have been made into fanart and fanfic.

Ichabod Crane Counselor a fanart depicting Ichabod giving advice in his own way, referencing his "bff George Washington" and being rather sharp with someone irritated at being cut up in traffic given his own rather more pressing issues.

Fan Friday: Abbie and Ichabod, 1700s-style by Monique Jones - instead of Ichabod in modern times this beautiful artwork shows he and Abbie dressed in clothing of the 1700s.

A humorous look at some of Crane's finest moments, correcting a historical tour guide, wondering why anyone would pay for water, and having problems with a laptop.

Another humorous vid with plenty of "fish out of water" moments.
