I suppose this is a counterpoint to "In Vino Veritas" where a tipsy Kat talked about her feelings :) I'm glad the focus on her personal issues works because of course personal feelings and relationships are the core of the story :)
My head canon is that Kat's mother went on a voyage and never returned. The rocky coastlines mean it's dangerous to travel too far out to sea and she was presumed dead. The "why" she went is something Kat will have to discover later.
I admit I'm heavily influenced by Pratchett here, and the almighty Sea Queen of "Small Gods" :)
