Title: No Contest

Characters: Gaius
Rating: G
Challenge: Merlin100 #23:"Loyalty" & 100_Tales prompt #079 “Loyalty”
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Disclaimer: Not for profit. I don’t own Merlin, Shine/BBC does.
Summary: Gaius used to know where his loyalties lay
Author Note: I’m not sure how well this works; I’ve rewritten it three times but concrit would be welcome. I’m also fairly certain that while Merlin is Arthur’s manservant, he is still Gaius’s apprentice, as per the pilot, though I could be wrong. I need sleep, really...

Gaius, like Merlin, had been apprenticed to a physician, and had formed a bond with the future king.
Admittedly their bond wasn’t forged as quickly or as deeply, but there was trust and respect on both sides, and Gaius had always been unfailingly loyal.
When Merlin was entrusted to his care however, things changed. Merlin was the son Gaius had never had, the magician Gaius might have been, and quite possibly the best chance Arthur had of surviving to be king.
If it came to a choice between Uther and Merlin, Gaius knew that he would choose Merlin every time.
