With ratties you just have to watch them, or hide/cover the wires - you could try something like these on more valuable cables:

For cats and dogs you can get anti chew sprays which taste bitter and so discourage chewing:

Susan had one to stop the puppy chewing the dining furniture but I can't say it was a huge success - but then Mara is/was very stubborn, as Malamutes tend to be!
