When I was young – no, when I was human – I loved the dawn. Sunrise meant a new day. An end to the night, fraught with dangers.

"Dawn comes early, with rosy fingers," or so some translations of The Odyssey go. Nikolai read it to me back then, enchanting me with literature just as he enchanted me with his looks, his voice, his personality. Sunrise – like Nikolai himself - was romantic, poetic.

When Nikolai made me what I am now, I took the name Aurelia in honour of the first sunrise I saw with new eyes. It was so vivid and vibrant. Golden sunlight pierced rose hued clouds. It took my breath away.

Yet now the dawn means danger. During daylight hours I do not have full access to my gifts. I am almost human once more under the sun's fiery gaze. Only night's dark cloak brings forth my preternatural strength and formidable healing powers.

In spite of this, I still love to watch the sun rise. Sometimes I like to sit upon the rooftop of our apartment building, watching dawn's rosy fingers bathe the city in a warm glow. No matter what happened yesterday, the sunrise heralds a new day and brings me hope and happiness.

It makes perfect sense. :D People quite often fall in love with all sorts of dangerous things. :D
And it's interesting to see how some things change for the characters as they progress, and how some things don't. :D

It's a great piece, bb! :D

Lovely, poetic piece :)

It fits that as a vampire she still loves the dawn. Vampires - people in general - so often like stuff that isn't good for them ;)

That's so beautifully written! First of all, I love your descriptions of dawn, what it means and how it is a start to something new every day, to hope, etc. Then I love how you linked that to your character and the background story. I love why she took this name when she was changed into what she's now. No surprise she still loves dawn, even if the night is better for her. I also like that this is written from first person; suits the story very well. Great story!
