The male Confessor issue is the only aspect discussed - perhaps males are not so easily made compliant? I wonder how much of the male Confessor issue is that they're evil, and how much is that they won't play by the rules.

And there are some creepy implications about gender roles in the fact that the Confessors have this power, but they're all women, and they were created by wizards, who (as far as we've seen) are always men.
